It's definitely not what it used to be.

Pros

The support staff are basically nice people who work hard for little pay.

Cons

An administration that is out of touch with reality. Very high turnover. Not even a cost of living increase in salary (there's no money in the budget) yet admin gave themselves huge increases. Very low morale.

Pros

Resources are by far excellent. The people, librarians and patrons, were talented and exciting to work with. They understood what the job entailed. Change was easily embraced.

Cons

When I worked with Susan Quinn years ago, I was surprised that people in the library did not run through the hallways crying. She is the reason why the offices and librarian staff do not work efficiently. Passive aggressive and ignores the larger picture, she is the reason why it is going down hill. Leadership needs to sit down and take a moment to understand what the patrons need and want.

Pros

I worked as a full-time Librarian for several years at the Ocean County Library. While many of my colleagues were excellent people and professionals, the management team was consistantly dysfunctional and unprofessional. The state benefits are very good but employee contribution costs rise each year due to state change and minimal salary raises.

Cons

Upper management routinely shouted at and berated each other and support staff, hired friends to high-level positions and lowered staff morale by instituting poor policy changes. There was very little to enjoy at this job professionally. While professional development was strong under the former director, it is almost non-existant under the current management team. Heavy-handed upper management. Terrible HR department (confidentiality is routinely breached and hiring practices are borderline illegal). High turnover in professional and support roles. Drug users in many of the branches and security/staff safety is of very little concern to management (dispite verbal promises). Police now frequent the Toms River branch due to gang activity and heroin abuse. Multiple locations have seen arrests in the last year.
