Pros

This is an amazing place to work if you are a university student or recent graduate. The starting pay is also higher than minimum wage jobs and the hours are pretty flexible. I've worked at a few different Oxford Learning Centres over the past 7 years and can confidently say that your experience as an employee depends entirely on that particular centre's management! The location I am at currently is wonderful. We are encouraged to cater to each child's needs and have the freedom to approach teaching in our own ways. The environment is high energy but very supportive which is completely different from my old center where management was quite oppressive and lacked empathy for its students and staff. Teaching is quite fulfilling and being able to make a kid's day or genuinely see them understand a concept makes it worthwhile.

Cons

As long as you don't mind giving up your evenings and waking up early on Saturday mornings, the hours are pretty good. This is obvious but dealing with children can be exhausting! Teaching three kids at once who are all at different grade levels requires a lot of patience, skill, and time management. There's not too much room for growth at an individual centre. You can move into administrative/management positions if you want to stay in the field of teaching, management needs support, or, you work there for long enough.

Pros

The staff here are so great! The management is so caring, accommodating, and supportive. Really good environment overall.

Cons

4 hour shift, with the option of Monday and Wednesday, or Tuesday and Thursday. Must be available for one of those pairings.

Mismanaged & Disorganized

Pros

Students really responded well to getting a new tutor when I started.

Cons

Horribly disorganized and mismanaged. Misrepresented company work hours and duties during interview. Unethical business practices. Asked staff to make fake Google reviews. Asked staff to lie and cover when head office comes for a site review. Actually lied there are no College and University programs and no specialty programs for students with challenges. Over hire so they can treat tutors badly and have spares. High turnover of tutors. No one leaves happy. Any questions or requests for discussion result in punatively having hours cut. Last minute schedule changes cut to 2 hour shifts. If you can't come in they take you off the schedule entirely as punishment. No manager nor supervisor on site to deal with parent concerns nor staff concerns. Parent complaints routinely blamedon staff or dismissed. Staff complaints blamed dismissed or blamed on corporate policy or lack of funding. No camaraderie no rapport... staff is miserable. No regard given to health and safety of students nor staff. No safety committee, no emergency protocols in place. No care given to ensuring first aid cpr on site. This is the first job I considered quitting but it was a moot point as they just stopped putting me on the schedule.

Not Horrible

Pros

It is very fulfilling when you've got the job right and you've got the right team. The effects on the children are profound especially in the dawn of the AI era, it's especially comforting to know that these kids will have genuinely learned some skills that will take them far. The collaboration with the teachers and staff also is great.

Cons

The job is overdemanding, you will be overworking often. Parents can often be rude and demanding especially since prices for these services have gone up and with it has come a sense of entitlement that makes setting expectations very difficult. Healthwise, you will be exposed to all sorts of bugs because of these kids. Lastly, this tends to be quite a dead end job, after this position, there is nothing other than join the head office (HQ/HO) in some admin capacity.
