Great mission; poor management

Pros

This is a great cause and you really do feel like you are making a difference at times. The hours are not bad and volunteered overtime is only required during certain times of the year. In some positions, there are opportunities to make great connections in the community and attend interesting events. Coworkers are some of the most selfless people I've ever worked with -- they make the organization succeed.

Cons

If you're looking to move up in your career, this is not the place to try to do it. This organization is about as flat as they come. The executive director oversees every small detail of the organization, which often makes it difficult to move things forward or even schedule a meeting. Technology is not fully utilized, making systems very outdated and slow. Expectations are not properly communicated, which can result in a lot of frustration and extra work. Innovation is touted yet new ideas are not heard or appreciated. Because of these things, employee morale is quite low.

Strange culture

Pros

Important mission. Great co-workers. Family friendly. Generous vacation and benefits. Great reputation in the community.

Cons

Executive Director micromanages every aspect of the organization. Nothing goes out the door without her edits, input, and approval meaning every project is delayed forever (sometimes months) unless it is one of her pet projects. Old style, top-down management. Low employee morale among those who work closely with ED. No real strategic planning.

PACER Center Pros and Cons

Pros

The families that PACER serve are great and there are many opportunities to network with other professionals in the field. The vast majority of employees are great and the causes PACER works for are very important. PACER is a well known and well respected company that has the power to do a lot of good for a lot of people. You can make a difference in this job.

Cons

The director of the organization has a hand in everything to the point where it is difficult to do your job. The upper management shows very little trust in or respect for lower level employees. Employees are expected to put in many more hours than they are contracted for. The positive sides of PACER shown to the public often vary from the tense feelings of PACER on the inside.
