Pros

Great mission that genuinely helps many people. Great coworkers dedicated to empowerment and transforming lives. We are here to do everything possible to uplift untapped talent. Some people can work remotely. The benefits are pretty good. Not all teams are bad.

Cons

Name calling and yelling by managers is the norm. I’ve seen it up the chain of command and in a few teams. There are obvious retaliations and vendettas by managers. Some team members are clearly undermined by managers. Personal insults unrelated to work performance and discriminatory statements (targeting women, LGBTQI, disability). Managers trash talk people in meetings, tell us to “shut up” and other unprofessional behaviors. Upper leadership are aware of this, and they are the same. Managers engage in name-calling, personal insults and screaming in private Zoom meetings, followed by praising the same people in team meetings. When issues are reported to HR, specific instances of abuse, retaliation, harassment is not believed, and witnesses are not contacted. People facing abuse are often terminated or compelled to leave, and there is no accountability for the known abuse. Climate of fear and overwork, with verbal threats of termination often. Extremely unrealistic deadlines mean working 10 to 12 hours every day. Not sometimes, every day. Pay is significantly below industry standard, making the actual pay close to fast food wage. Phenomenally disorganized. Job descriptions do not align with the actual roles. Micromanagement, led by leadership that lacks an understanding of requirements, processes, or tech. Outdated tech and tools below industry standard. People are required to work outside their skills, and short deadlines lead to low-quality work. Already intense schedules do not account for simultaneous multiple projects plus urgent ad hoc requests. Unrealistic recruitment targets mean unprepared learners are set up for failure. Covid outbreaks and covid+ people required to be on site. KPIs are falsified. There is no clear process or procedure, and people who assert themselves tend to get their way. Performance evaluations add unattainable goals after the fact. Avoid. It is not worth it, not even short term.

Pros

The best benefits I have seen are the PTO plus collective summer and winter vacations.

Cons

You have to be very patient in what you do and at the same time have good time management. If you don't have those two, you will be in serious trouble.

Pros

The staff at Per Scholas are always ready to assist each other in getting the job done. The benefits are quite impressive for a nonprofit org, including a 6% employer match in the 401K. The life insurance plan is actually the main reason I've stayed with this organization.

Cons

As I mentioned before, it's better to move quickly than to wait around. The leadership lacks thorough training in strategic planning yet gets promoted as if they've achieved something remarkable. They readily approve any idea without considering the potential risks or ripple effects on other departments. Every task is treated as urgent, and the organization prioritizes brand expansion over fixing foundational issues. From my perspective, they've strayed from their core values and mission; it seems like everything is rushed to meet their deadlines. This is the first time I've felt reluctant to grow within this organization due to the lack of accountability and transparency.

Pros

Lots of PTO (nearly 50 days combined per year), great benefits, and the people really do care about you. Great place to make impact on others lives.

Cons

Leadership may have different vision of what your career trajectory will be (uncertainty of promotions/job changes). Also moving more and more from remote to in-person.

Pros

It offers great opportunity for advancement and is a good thing to do for 2-3 years to get experience on your resume. They do pay you for normal hours between teaching classes however, which is a plus. They give a large amount of sick/vacation time that pools each year as well. They give a great benefits package to even the lowest level of employees and have a good match rate for a 401k.

Cons

The management at my campus was atrocious. During my 2+ years at the company we went through 3 site directors. Each time the site director in charge tried several ways to get me fired for seemingly no reason. I ended up reporting each one to HR multiple times with no real action actually happening. HR was more than happy to meet with me and hear my concerns, but when it came to action, it seemed that the most they got was a slap on the wrist, until they finally got fired. If you're an instructor, forget about taking sick days/vacation days while your class is running. There is absolutely no support when it comes to finding coverage for your classes. You're encouraged to take all of your time off while you are between teaching classes. I was actually fired for taking too much time off from work while class was in session. (I was going through a period where I was getting sick every few weeks). I ended up taking roughly 6 sick days over the course of 3 months and wasn't given coverage for my classes for any of those days, so my class just wasn't held, which put us severely behind in terms of curriculum. I ended my time at Per Scholas with over 100 hours of sick time banked, which they encourage you to use while you are between classes, even though you can't really control when you actually need to use them; meanwhile, the management at my campus seemed to be taking vacations every few weeks. I was also the only remote instructor at my campus, which may be why I was encouraged to not use sick days as I was at home anyways. Over all, I would highly recommend staying away from this company as a whole. I have heard very bad things about other campuses as well. If you do apply, apply to the Remote Training Team, as during my time there, I had the best boss of my entire career. It seems that it is the one of the only teams at this company that is run coherently. Also, a lot of what Per Scholas advertises to the potential students is utter hogwash. I have been contacted by previous learners from my classes that I taught that said that after they completed their cohort they received no contact from Per Scholas at all. In Per Scholas' advertising they say that they give support to their graduate for up to 2 years after graduation. Also, the cohort I taught was advertised as leading to an internship/apprenticeship, although the entire time I worked there, their response for where those actually were was "we're working on it". This is all paired with the fact that they pay WELL below the industry standard for the same job title. I understand that it is a non-profit and they probably can't afford to pay the going rate for these positions, but it still seems terrible that they would pay as low as they do. an Instructional Assistant job goes for roughly $15/hr, which you literally make at most fast food restaurants, if not a higher wage. I was also blocked from getting a promotion by my superior for several months. He would tell me that he was waiting on a response from someone in the company, who I would then go to to ask, and they would always say that they were waiting on a response from him. I ended up getting fired just before the promotion was about to go through, which says a lot about the management at the company as well.

Pros

This place has great benefits and great people to work for and alongside. I feel seen and heard unlike other places I've worked.

Cons

They are still growing and figuring things out since my department is rather new. National leadership tries to govern us as if we're the other educational departments, but it doesn't work.

Pros

Very friendly staff, managers have check-ins with you and really care about your growth and how comfortable you are. They are always pressing you to upscale even though its not mandatory they are always pushing you to do better.

Cons

The health benefits have a copay and take a good amount out of your check if you are selecting more than just base health benefits. Other than that it's a great company to work at.
