Pros

If placed in the right salon, you might actually earn a decent wage, and if the manager likes you

Cons

Managers often aren’t even hairdressers, not even close, they might have been managing a retail store before with no understanding of hairdressing industry. Toxic inviroment is often and no one really cares about your problem with the salon, they don’t give you extra time for your clients, no Christmas bonus, you are not allowed to call in sick in December, and if you do you’re more than likely be treated really bad on your return, not flexible with holidays, sometimes they will even approve your holidays and they tell you you can’t go one month prior without caring of how you’re going to handle it, double standards between staff and they won’t fire you if they don’t want you there, they will rather make your life a living hell so you quit yourself. I could just go on and on about what I experienced there in my two years with that company.

Pros

Long term there are none. Good buzzing environment when it’s busy

Cons

Standing all day at reception No flexibility with days off (including a family emergency!) Expected to arrive before your shift to open the salon and stay late to close the salon and not get paid for it. Expected to surpass annual targets but with no bonus structure (talking about reception teams here btw). Managers get great Christmas bonuses, Reception get maybe €250-350 before Christmas week if you’re lucky. Expect NOTHING else! They run a “Managers Course” where some reception teams get a chance to be trained as managers and “possibly” be placed as a salon manager afterwards. Complete BS because majority of those who attend the course get placed back in their original salon as receptionist again. Area Managers are all related to the PM family meaning it’s nearly impossible to move up the ladder. Head Office is an incestuous joke. Extremely high turn over of staff in salons due to NO BENEFITS, NO INSURANCE, NO PENSION and NO CHANCE FOR INCREASED SALARY (unless you’re there years and maintain passing your target which btw is not worth it)

Pros

Paid holidays, meeting new people, fast paced busy environment.

Cons

You are required to be in half an hour early to open up. (Not paid). You will not be paid if you are required to wait until after 6. Lunches are hardly ever gotten and so are coffee breaks. Unless you leave the salon and don’t return until your break is finished. Holidays are Saturday to Saturday. You cannot ask for a single day off. Progression into other areas are slim to none. If you want to use the bathroom you will have to wait until someone is free to cover reception. Full time coordinators are contracted to 40 hours expect to do much more, and asked to travel to other salons to cover reception.
