Worked at PING for five years and mostly enjoyed it. Real premium placed on work/life balance. We were encouraged to go play golf - where else can you truthfully say that? Weekends were 100% family time. Management, in general, was reasonable, patient and extremely passionate about golf.
Cons
People who were better golfers definitely got more attention and upward mobility. It was very cliquish. I guess it makes sense better golfers had more opportunities at a golf company but it seemed sort of unprofessional and wouldn't exist at any other company. People were stuck in the same jobs for years. Low-to-non existent pay increases. No or very little bonus. Scant profit sharing even if we seemed to be doing well.
As a golfer there is no better place to work than a place that stresses product innovation as much as PING. The family owned atmosphere allows for an awesome work-life balance. As with any company, you have to get your work done and goals met. However, if you have home or family-related issues, PING is very flexible and understanding. As a member of the design engineering group, we are at the forefront of the product development cycle. We receive a lot of support from executive management and they give us free reign to design to our passion. Oversight is not on a micro-level basis, but the owner and "family" does have the ultimate say in design direction.
When people leave the company they are genuinely appreciated and those who remain sincerely seem to be saddened. There are many here with 20+ years of seniority. That says something about the company where people want to stay that long and really enjoy what they do.
Cons
There aren't that many downsides. PING is a very conservative company that sometimes seems a little slow to embrace modern, proven trends in marketing strategy, supply chain management, and compensation techniques, but you'll hear very few complaints. It's not that there's an ignorance of new things, just a more measured approach to evaluate what fits PING culture and operating norms the best.
