Pros

Clearly work-life balance is the only real pro at this company. That means you get a reasonable amount of money, work minimal hours, really don’t have (despite the HR rhetoric) to further yourself through higher study or any other training. If a storm is coming half the office will leave, so make sure you leave your car parked outside at home so you have a good excuse to head off early when a hail storm has a 5% chance of coming. When considering the pros please read all the exhaustive list of cons (and other numerous reviews that I would 100% agree with), because a potential new employee really has to understand what they are up against even with this lure of a strong work-life balance.

Cons

Firstly, it is sad to say it appears to me and others that there are a lot of fake five star reviews added over the last year on this website so please read through all the reviews thoroughly and come to your own conclusions. It is interesting to see these glowing five star rated reviews don’t seem to be very deep in their justifications. If you are desperate for employment, and have no choice but to apply for a job here do make sure you ask to visit where you are working and have informal chats with a range of your future colleagues to see whether any issues raised in the many reviews here actually do hold weight. Also ask around both the Brisbane recruitment and broader financial services community for their views on QSuper as a place to work. Here is a summary of a few cons observed: -Appalling work culture and rampant factionalism. -Bullying culture is rampant. This is the biggest issue at the company. HR will ensure any investigation is manipulated to protect the company and the executive hierarchy, not the truth. In fact HR is responsible for most of the bullying (refer next point). -Gaslighting is rampant. For those of you who haven't heard this term before (and I hope you haven't), it is defined as "to manipulate (someone) by psychological means into questioning their own sanity." A person with a great employment history, education, team background who doesn't fit in to this toxic company will be subjected to this torture by HR. Don't risk this being you next. -Building trust with colleagues is near impossible. -Promoting incompetent candidates within. These incapable candidates are incompetent at understanding subject matter, the financial industry, ways to build a strong team culture, but I will admit they are masters at gaslighting and bullying. These people will do whatever their superiors ask, no matter how ridiculous, immoral or even worse it is. - There is no understanding by executive and management that there is value in recruiting quality external candidates to QSuper from Australia’s most admired companies. These people bring fresh ideas and fresh perspectives that support change. But then again despite the rhetoric for change, executive really don’t want it. -Lack of career development opportunities, a graduate program, or any proper succession planning. If you are from the Australian financial hubs of Sydney or Melbourne to take up an opportunity at QSuper you will be sadly disappointed. Too many have sadly made that mistake recently. The number of talented and experienced people (including the few good HR staff) who have left QSuper is truly scary. -Chief of HR who gets rid of anyone (almost instantly) that voices an opposing view, particularly one which would be deemed common sense and intelligent in every other company. If only one thing was to change in this company it has to be the appointment of a new Chief of HR, and a complete restructure and removal of most of the HR personnel, including all Heads below the Chief. The problems in the company start in this team. Bullying is rampant in the HR team itself let alone the bullying HR conducts on general QSuper staff. -Endless restructures that are only done because the previous restructure was so poorly thought through and executed. I have to wonder what professional experience those involved in restructures actually have. The way staff impacted are communicated to (or in many instances not communicated at all) is absolutely appalling and there is a total lack of dignity to many of those affected. -Indecision around strategy, marketing, IT, and projects. Don’t punish IT and project teams because you didn’t know what you wanted in the first place. You need a clear concise strategy that is agreed (and signed) by all key executives and stakeholders. -Executive KPIs and the balance scorecard is based around a bonus to Chief level and Heads not around value for QSuper members. -Engagement Survey. Are the scores really this high or have they been tampered with? Why doesn’t the Executive Team acknowledge there have been mistakes made and there is considerable room for improvement?

Incompetent senior management from the CEO down. A culture of sycophancy and outright bullying. If you think you’ve been hired to provide your expertise and professional opinion, you’ll very soon discover that this is not only unwelcome but you will be singled out for “special treatment” by HR. I personally know of at least 4 people who were summarily dismissed on completely false or trumped up charges. The Chief of HR is a nasty bully who seems to take a delight in breaking people. He and the CEO (who is a secret smoker but pretends he’s not - go figure) are often huddled together in the back alley, deciding what to do with the latest “troublemaker” aka someone who is just trying to do a good job and bring this archaic organisation into the 21st century. And don’t think the union or the code of conduct will protect you - they won’t. I could go on for ages but life’s too short :) If you’re thinking about taking a job at QSuper - just don’t. You will regret it. But don’t take my word for it - just make a few enquiries and you’ll soon discover that this would be poison for your career, and quite likely psychologically damaging to boot. Just say no.

Pros

Some great people to work alongside. Great place to work to boost your super balance. Get to leave at 4 pm most days.

Cons

Management needs to learn new skills. Poor HR team that really are floundering. CEO is running blind and more concerned with coffee and cigarettes than his staff. No chance of promotions even after endless and pointless leadership courses (again run by an inept HR team)
