Pros

While the phrase "a startup within a big company" is something large enterprises enjoy throwing around these days, I can truly attest that this is the culture and infrastructure of Rakuten Interactive. Along with this comes a handful of pros and cons: -Your contributions directly impact the team's outcomes; you're not simply following the path someone laid before you but are plotting your own course with minimal guidance -CEO is the hardest working person on the team and does an excellent job of selling everyone on his vision, while also focusing on providing opportunities to help you to work towards your long term career goals -The team is close knit, diverse, social, and best-of-breed -There's a focus on internally promoting -All roles have an externally facing element and ability for travel, allowing you to grow your network

Cons

-You have to be good at taking initiative and be internally motivated to get stuff done -We're in the early stages of building the business, including the team and processes, and so you won't survive if you're not ready to contribute to building up the Rakuten Interactive brand -US Headquarters in San Mateo is wonderfully hospitable, but not the most convenient location

Thanks for the insight, and there are of course pros and cons: a startup that has to follow the corporate rules and culture, whilst trying to break a few rules here and there. San Mateo is tough to get to from San Francisco, especially with the traffic. But we do offer full Caltrain reimbursement, discounted Scoop (carpool) rides, and $100 Lyft credits to all new employees.

Rakuten's 1st startup: you get what you put in

Pros

This is the company's 1st internal startup/incubation effort, and it is a very hard and demanding mission. - Small team gets to learn how to build a new company from scratch, while leveraging the resources of Rakuten Group - CEO works extremely long hours, is reachable at all times, takes time to mentor every employee - Culture of self-direction, performance, frugality, 0 politics, and diversity of all backgrounds - Starting at the ground floor, roles and rank have a high possibility of being accelerated - Everyday is different. Literally. You may be doing sales one day or making hoodies for the team - Lots of milestones and goals, especially international growth - Mature, supportive advisors who roll up their sleeves to do interviewing, operations - Travel opportunities between New York and San Francisco if that's what you like

Cons

- The hours are/will be long--this is not going to change as operations ramp up - Being new, it doesn't have all the perks and support system that a McKinsey would have - All flights are economy class, T&E is low and tightly controlled as "runway" - Have to conform with parent group, Rakuten, Inc. most of the time, such as attending the global Asakai (morning meetings) - Do not join if you're not looking for a challenge

Thanks for the great review! As we become more mature and organized, there will be individual responsibilities and swimming lanes. We'll try to keep the culture "startup-y" as we scale up. Sorry about the early morning Rakuten Group meetings!

Best of both worlds

Pros

1. Situation: Being a startup within an established public corporation gives most of the pluses (stability, benefits, access to expertise, etc) without many of the minuses (equity dilution, VC dictating where biz should go so they can get quick exit, etc) 2. Leadership: Head of business is broadly educated, motivated, has an enormous toolbox of skills and expertise, and is a great communicator = not only confidence that he will lead hte business to succeed, but also a great person to be around/to learn from 3. Opportunity: The business idea is incredibly exciting, and, to be able to participate, and influence, at an early stage, is very motivating. 4. Team: The currently assembled team is an amazing group of people who are incessantly collaborating to solve problems, and find unique ways to be scrappy/get s*** done. 5. Transparency: I know what we are trying to do, including our strategy and financial picture. Weekly team-wide meetings which include not only status updates from team members, but, also updates from leadership in terms of market, learnings, modifications to strategy, risks, etc. 6. Gourmet breakfast and lunch.

Cons

ost days go by in a blur of activity. It can get hectic, and stressful, but works for those who buy into the mission.

We know there's a lot to do, that's typical of a startup, which means multiple hats, a need for self-reliance, and a positive attitude towards change. Thanks so much for the positive feedback. Indeed, we are very small but super scrappy. Thank you.
