We welcome the feedback from this anonymous employee and appreciate them sharing their story and perspective, even if part of it is hard to hear. Unfortunately, not everyone exhibits Integrity, Humility, the Passion to Grow, and Emotional Intelligence to the extent needed to be on the team at Rockton.
I am thankful this person appreciated their autonomy, as indeed as leaders we do not micro-manage. It's sad to be viewed as disengaged, but I respect their viewpoint. I don't plan to change my involvement or engagement with my company, because owners get to make the choice of involvement when they risk their own livelihoods to build, fund, and support a highly functional team. I know for me that *not* micro-managing team members is a sign of respect I'd want from my employer.
I'm thankful they appreciated our all-expenses-paid-including-life-partners retreats to Cancun, Walt Disney World, and other premier destinations for learning and fun. And yes, we do support all our team members with their families coming first. We make allowances for the unforeseen circumstances that pull us away from our careers and into caring for a family member. That's what family does. And yes, we are guilty of treating our team like family. These are people we work with and play with, because they matter.
It's great to be recognized for our 401k contributions, the generous top-tier health insurance, 25 days of PTO (yes, Christmas plus 24 other days), and Personal Development Funds, which allow our team members funding to pursue personal interests that have nothing to do with their careers.
We pay competitive wages and review market salaries often. Yes, salaries alone are sometimes at the lower end of the typical spectrum. When you include all the perks we offer, our salaries are above market averages. More importantly, we don’t want to attract job-hoppers who are after maximizing a paycheck before they move on. We invest in our team and work hard to retain them. Most stay because they love our culture and values and realize their compensation is not only fair, but they also benefit from profit sharing.
Growing a company from nothing to a multi-million-dollar ERP channel leader has been both rewarding and humbling. I accept and embrace my own inexperience and imperfection and strive to do better by practicing the Passion to Grow. There are more capable leaders than I. And I appreciate that most of my team sees my intention to do better as a leader, and they continue to follow, despite my flaws. I regret my leadership shortfalls let this person down.
We succeed only because each person on our team is successful. I am passionate and proud of the work our team does. Our culture is based on Integrity, Humility, Emotional Intelligence, and the Passion to Grow. It’s not a fit for everyone, and we know and respect that.
