Pros

This job does truly provide for a great opportunity to shadow physicians and witness first-hand what it's like to work in an ER. You are in the patient room with each physician and it's an excellent learning opportunity for individuals seeking to purse a career in medicine, i.e. physician assistant, doctor, nurse..

Cons

Before accepting this position, be prepared and aware that it is stressful. The ER operates 24/7 so expect to work graveyard shifts during the weekend. The learning curve is very steep in the beginning and you are expected to learn a LOT and FAST. There is an abundance of medical knowledge you need to learn as well as receive training on the EMR system. I'd advise that you be sure about a career in medicine/health before committing to this job. Don't work here for an easy or relaxed part-time job

Being a scribe IS a very difficult job. Your suggestion to 'be sure about a career in medicine/health' is spot on. Being a scribe isn't for those who just 'need a job'. You work 1-on-1 with physicians to manage their workflows all the while typing furiously, making calls, answering calls, running around the department entering recheck notes, etc. Scribes are expected to learn a mountain of information to perform well. The few who are accepted for a position place themselves at a significant advantage over all other applicants to medical school, PA school or NP school. Your input about feeling understaffed is a valid concern. This is something we are continually working to balance at all our sites. Too much coverage and people don't have enough hours; too little coverage and you get stressed out and feel overworked. We closely monitor our staffing levels on a weekly basis taking into account everyone's schedules and preferences. We understand these change from semester to semester and sometimes last-minute. We hire incredible people. Our strength at ScribeConnect is every scribe that works with us. And our team throughout our company is absolutely amazing. As schedules fluctuate and emergencies happen, everyone comes together to help each other out. It's a very dynamic environment and we have the most amazing teammates looking out for one another. It's not always easy, but then again, neither is the chosen professional path of most of our scribes. We thank you for your hard work and time with us.
