Complete lack of respect

Pros

I generally enjoyed my time there, some nice people and decent perks.

Cons

They told us late last year that there wouldn't be any layoffs, and then in November I was let go along with 21 others (including people who had large impacts on the company culture). I was initially told it was due to "market conditions", which alone is pretty bad, there was no remorse or even acknowledgement from management that they had made mistakes that lead to this. We then later found out that certain things are meant to be done before a mass layoff in Switzerland, which smallpdf did not do. Their response to this was that only 9 of us were actually laid of, and the rest were fired due to their own performance, and I was now one of the latter (and apparently this is legally totally ok). We weren't given the performance improvement plans that employees are promised (they were quick to point out that they aren't obliged to do this, but couldn't give me a reason beyond it being a "company decision" as to why I didn't get one). I got a meeting with a couple of managers in which they gave all the things they'd come up with to justify me being let go due to performance, most of which were largely unfounded but of course they hadn't taken the time to discuss these things with me beforehand, so I had no opportunity to explain and defend myself. They made a pretty awful offer of one extra months pay than I am legally entitled to, but given all at once at the end of the year, so once you factor in the taxes it didn't really work out that favorably. I was told by just about everyone involved that I could reach out if I needed any assistance, but most of my questions have been ignored and it's taken me months to chase them up for various documents, including my reference letter. During this time there has been multiple more rounds of firings, including the C levels and just recently another 26 people gone, as far as I am aware still with little communication to the current employees.

Pros

- Nice looking product, really a lot of potential - International (but mostly white) culture, lot of expats, they cover your relocation - They are investing in brand a lot, it does look good on CV - They use metrics a lot so decisions are made with better arguments and predictions - A lot of different, specialised departments and posaibility to collaborate with them - Nice offices - From the outside everything looks expensive and like a dream - Development budget and unlimited holiday - Expensive swag and trips - It’s not for people with weak mental health or good manners

Cons

- Constant stress, pressure and chasing impossible deadlines - Money and greed is management’s top priority - Most of people are there because it looks good on CV - People have breakdowns all the time, especially in Zurich - There are groupies, even though most of people will deny this - For every bad review they make a new employee to write something positive on both Glassdoor and Joberty (Serbian Glassdoor) - I am pretty sure they hunt your “unlimited” vacation days and do perfomance metrics based on that - They say they are there for you but you are easily replaced, especially if you disagree with somebody on higher position than you, god forbid your manager - Managers are mostly very egoistic and are not accepting feedback (please PLEASE do not confide in them, they will get @ you sooner or later) - They are firing people like crazy, when I was there, they fired 8 people in a month. After some time I heard from a colleague they fired a whole team which was earning most of the revenue… I still hear they are firing in bulk, people who were there since the beginning or new people, but wothout really a reason. (I was not given a reason but I wanted out anyway so I didn’t fight back I left and never looked back) - Think twice before you speak. Some confidential talk with HR will be shared with wider group.

Pros

Product loved by users. Bootstrapped company. Smart and friendly colleagues. Fair & transparent compensation philosophy. Clear career paths & growth plans. 1:1 coaching for people managers. White canvas to draw your vision and make an impact. Full autonomy and support from leadership. Approachable and flat hierarchy. Quarterly OKRs.

Cons

The company is evolving its vision and strategy and the teams are moving to a mid-long term approach of thinking and planning. As this is not yet consolidated, at times there can be a feeling of lack of direction.

Working for a brand

Pros

- Nice product with a lot of potential, very cute brand, makes you look good on LinkedIn. - Nice looking offices and equipment. - Occasional company trips and expensive swag. - Help with relocation. - When they fire you, they pay you for 2-3 months. - There are couple of very nice people, but please don't think that's enough to make it up to all the cons listed below.

Cons

- If you like working under constant pressure, stress, toxic environment waiting for the closest coworker, your direct manager or HR to stab you in the back, this is a perfect place for you. - Managers are only there to serve the top management, you are easily replaceable (don't worry, they will do their best to hide that from you). - I never experienced worst collective mental health. People are having breakdowns every single day, hiding to cry in bathrooms and being passive-aggressive on Slack. - Product is only chasing more money, they wrap it very nicely under a great design, so you start to feel bad after some time, after you realise it. - Almost every person in management position is a sociopath, they do great job in making you feel small, unworthy and disrespected on so many levels. - If you are a white male, you will have a good time here, and you can disregard most of these points. - They are firing people on almost monthly level, so you get to think about if this is your last day every day.

Pros

In this company, you will find nice people willing to help, a good atmosphere in general (at least until they decided to fire 15% of the company)

Cons

Very unorganized, I get the feeling that lately, they hired so many people without a great plan of development and when they saw that their head was underwater and the economic environment got tougher they decided to fire 15% of only individual contributors, no managers. Irresponsible move.

A House of Cards: Don‘t bother working there

Pros

- Collaborating with lots of talented employees which made the company great - Happiness events where employees could plan bondig activities - budget to invest into personal growth

Cons

- Layoffs are quite frequent. 20+ employees in Nov 2023, CEO, CTO and VP Marketing were let go in Feb 2023 and a week later another 20+ employees were laid off from Barcelona, Belgrade & Zurich. - Rehiring layed off positions just 1 month later on linkedin. Smallpdf must have realized that vital positions were cut off, which is quite embarrassing to watch and even more disrespectful to the previous employees holding the position. - Fake transparent culture. Managers pretend to be on your side by listening to your feedback and concerns and „try“ to push for your personal growth. Just wait until there is a performance review and they will use everything you’ve said against you and suddenly label you as an „underperformer“ - Most chaotic OKR system with no long term strategy. None of the goals are aligned. The management goes by a „fail forward“ mentality and push for unreasonable short term goals. If you fail your OKR you can expect to be out on PIP or even fired on a whim. - The company was never reliant on investors which was amazing but in order to sell the company they started whipping their employees to push for quantity instead of quality. The product is in dire need of improvement but it is never seen as a priority. - Toxic HR: They are trying to keep appearances by downplaying the gravity of the frequent layoff situation. They treat you with the upmost disrespect once you are laid off. They have the gall to reply to glassdoor reviews by telling „they are following the layoff trend“.

Hi and thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. As you are our current employee, you are aware that the product strategy is changing and that saying goodbye to some people had nothing to do with "the layoff trends" but actually with those positions becoming redundant in new setup. Naturally, some new positions were opened, but with different specialities and for a different product. Changes are hard for all of us, and the change in management had to cause a chain reaction that led the whole organisation to the new product vision and clear path and roadmap. As you know, we are working on different initiatives to rebuild the culture and engage our employees in decision making process. You are free to contribute, whether thorough some of the anonymous channels we have, or through your manager. We encourage you to use that opportunity.
