Don't get comfortable

Pros

Excellent pay and benefits, also snacks and drinks constantly provided, that was a nice addition. Equipment was always readily available.

Cons

Zero job security. You are expendable. If they can find someone cheaper who's willing to give up more of their personal life than you, you're gone. End of story. Don't buy in to their line of work/life balance, they will find any excuse to replace you with someone they believe they can get more out of. It doesn't matter if you're constantly ahead of schedule, if you can work harder and sacrifice more, you'd better do it or YOU WILL BE REPLACED.

That's right: Don’t get comfortable. We don't want people to be comfortable as that means they're not challenging themselves. We reward people who like to stay on top of the latest technologies and who strive to improve how we do things just as they strive to improve themselves. You are NOT expendable unless you want to coast, remain static in your knowledge and would rather take direction rather than help plan the direction our products take. It's easy to blame a company for your own lack of initiative.

Developing Careers As Well As Software

Pros

I have enjoyed my time with SmarterTools. There truly is a team environment, each department works hand in hand to accomplish goals. I have yet to see one individual say to another, that’s not my problem. We’re here to work together from the CEO down. One of the perks working at SmarterTools is the fully stocked kitchen. When the 2:00 crash hits you’ll find something in the kitchen to snack on to keep you going. Why is that? Because they do care about the employees. It’s not uncommon for the CEO to declare a half day to go to the movies together, or to have lunch catered. As a company SmarterTools has a positive outlook and is growing. SmarterTools has a record of promoting from within, meaning there is opportunity to grow your career.

Cons

Can't work from home during flu season.

Pros

Great group of people to work with from the CEO on down. The company, products, and management team is very well respected in the industry, and have a pretty long history (this is not a startup company). It's very much a "word hard, play hard" atmosphere, that maintains a laid back feel and dress code. Lots of opportunity to advance to managerial roles, if you are willing to work hard, go the extra mile, and show a high level of commitment and dedication. The products sell themselves, and are used by literally millions of people worldwide. Awesome perks! It's not uncommon to have catered lunches, trips to the movies, bring your dog to work days, and annual company trips. The entire staff attended a conference in San Francisco last year, and this year, there are talks of the entire company being taken on a trip to Hawaii! Pay is competitive, benefits are good, and the employer 401k match is outstanding.

Cons

Some people might feel 'stuck' in their position if they do not put in the extra effort that it takes to succeed. I know that certain positions would like the ability to work from home part time.
