Pros

- Decent compensation - Standard progression for investment folks - Deep pocket for investments or company events - Decent learning & development budget - Brand (at least within Asia) - Easier deal sourcing in Asia due to brand - Interesting industry and teams with diverse capabilities - Mature organization with structure and frameworks - Capable and hardworking senior leaders - Perks such as free coffee, access to night safari etc

Cons

- Bureaucracy - Long hours - Very structured place and team can operate in silo sometimes - System sucks which creates a lot of inefficiency and manual work across the firm (but hopefully will get better with increasing investments in IT side) - A bit too top down and not as commercial as advertised - Not enough thought leadership within investment circle - Too much work done for the sake of doing or to impress people without creating meaningful impact - Compensation and accountability of leaders not fully aligned - Too much face time and promotion based on sucking-up, not actual results - Too much institutional work (required to organise company events - can be good or bad depends on how you see it) - Some really bad middle managements who have no clue about leadership or developing their people, treat people like tools and micromanage (But culture depends on team, so do enough due diligence on the team before joining) - In general, culture where people are afraid of raising a different point of view or sticking their heads out

Pros

Pays well. Great benefits. Easy life cos no KPIs to meet. As one of the Senior Mgt leaders tells his staff, the best way to survive in Temasek is to do nothing and keep a low profile.

Cons

HR (or O&P as they call it internally) is from the 1960s. Hypocritical and toxic political culture. Patronizing and egotistical management. The biggest issue highlighted by staff for over 10 years in anonymous staff surveys is fear of retribution. Despite everything they say and claim, the performance assessment is based on popularity. The people who get promoted are the most political and those who game the system. Performance doesn't really matter if you're popular.

Bad work culture

Pros

Good benefits. That’s the only pro

Cons

No work life balance and highly bureaucratic. Filled with people who talk big but don’t do much work. And people from government agencies who can’t find other corporate jobs outside. Obsessed with unproductive meetings where people take the chance to debate for the sake of debating, resulting in a waste of time. Loads of hungry people who want to climb without doing much work. Demanding work culture where you can be asked to produce work beyond working hours even when it’s not at all urgent.
