Pros

It's a good company run by some very smart people. They have experienced tremendous growth over nearly their entire lifespan as a company. They set reasonable goals and they reach them. Bonus structure is confusing, but generous. If they like you, they'll do anything for you.

Cons

Frequent far-right political discussions and conspiracy theory discussions in common areas (even if you agree with it, a workplace seems like an odd place for that kind of talk). Work/life balance does not exist; all employees are expected to make work their highest priority (to the point where multiple employees have ended marriages for the job). Significant gaps in both actual and perceived status dependent solely on office politics. If they don't like you, they will make you miserable. Well-earned reputation for instantly firing anyone that gives notice, regardless of circumstance. Significant problems with diversity of any and all kinds.

Old fashioned policies

Pros

Total compensation was competitive. Company is extremely stable and committed to staying private. Unlimited sick time. Year end bonus is paid out mid-December. More intelligent, capable, reliable colleagues than not. If you're in a good group, you'll learn a lot. No slackers allowed. Company's 401k contribution is given as one lump sum and depends on company performance, was around 7% or 8% (iirc).

Cons

Significant portion of total comp is tied up in year-end bonus, which is completely arbitrary. Two weeks of vacation time (my manager encouraged me to abuse the unlimited sick time, ick). Definitely an old boys club with some very old fashioned opinions freely shared in the open. Some managers shoot from the hip in their decision making, so policies can change with the wind. Company has very flat org structure and almost everyone in management has been there 10+ years, so don't count on getting promoted anytime in this life unless they decide to open a position for you.

Good company, very old-school

Pros

Active in a lot of energy industry, a lot of perspective across the industry from experienced colleagues

Cons

Low pay with complicated bonus structure. Opaque about career advancement, old school in the sense that advancement depends on waiting to get ‘tapped’ by upper management.
