Pros

At Test Double we live our values and thrive on doing great work for our clients. We care about the humans that write the software, and the humans that use it. It is such a great place to work. We are 100% remote, have a lot of autonomy, and we have managed to hire for empathy. We embed with our client teams and meet them where they are. For each client, we balance delivering high quality software with coaching, mentoring and consulting on agile process based on what they need. We joke that our favorite answer is "it depends" meaning we know that context is everything. Each business is unique, teams are immutable, things change over time, balancing the pros and cons of any given situation requires careful thought and consideration. It is a great place to work if you love learning and being challenged every day while maintaining a great work life balance. As far as I know, we have never terminated an employee due to lack of work and we are still growing at a sustainable pace.

Cons

The two hardest things about working at Test Double are: We are sometimes "smoke jumping" in to companies in crisis. There may have been lay offs 6 months before we arrive, or the management is concerned about their employees skills and productivity. This is really intense and requires strong emotional intelligence and clear boundaries. We are growing, but not nearly as big as someplace like Thoughtworks. One impact of this is that depending on the market we don't get as much choice in which client or technology we work with as would be ideal. All our folks, even sale and account management, do their best to match our self expressed skills and preferences to client placement, but the "project puzzle" as we call it is thorny. As consultants we are comfortable with the idea that as markets shift we are the first to be brought on when things improve, and the first to be let go when there is a downturn. We carry a bench, meaning we all have secure employment even if a client cancels a contract, but it can still be stressful when things change unexpectedly.

Pros

Test Double is full of thoughtful, professional software engineers & consultants and is a wonderful place to work and to grow. The company actively encourages personal development with 10% time and generous education/conference reimbursements. Leadership across all parts of the company is thoughtful and intentional in how things are communicated both internally and externally. There are a wide range of technical and less-technical challenges to solve across the client base, and the team doesn't shy away from staffing unique & exploratory engagements rather than allowing Test Double to become a "one-trick pony". Test Double also exemplifies remote culture: there has never been a central office, distributed employees have access to a wealth of online social engagements, and overall the org has really nailed what it means to work together effectively from anywhere.

Cons

The company's rapid growth over the last two years has created some gaps. The largest is that the progression system for consultants is in constant flux so it's difficult to seek a promotion or change in role, though regular salary review & advancement is still observed for everyone. Recent investments have been mostly focused on organizational support rather than feeding back into consulting teams. There has been significant tooling thrash as leadership & management struggle to find platforms that fit the unique processes they workshop. All of these feel like regular growing pains, but at an organization as unique as Test Double, they have a magnified effect. I expect this friction to pass eventually - the only way out is through.

Pros

The autonomy Test Double expects on behalf of their Agents is remarkable, and it's built on a large amount of well earned trust with clients. The diversity of client engagements and challenges they face offers a great breadth of experience to grow in a career, particularly if you're interested in technical leadership roles. There's a lot of soft-skill overlap in the best consultants and great engineering leaders. IMO, this role hits a great balance of healthy comp / benefits, autonomy to work with clients how and where works best for you, room for growth, and a supportive internal culture.

Cons

By nature, being a great consultant is very challenging. It requires a healthy mix of technical strength, emotional intelligence, and intution about how to "fit in" at a client while also being apart from the group and delivering valuable contributions to their team & software. There's a lot of great consultants to learn from here, but this type of software career isn't for everyone. Test Double also works with a mixed bag of clients. Sometimes there's a certain amount of choice on what type of engagement you'll be on, but it often is up to chance of which clients need support when you join, or the engagement you're on ends. If working at a client of a certain size, in a certain tech stack, or in a certain industry are important to you then this may be a challenging role. Being fully embedded on a client project and working fully remotely can make it hard to build and maintain strong relationships with other Test Doublers outside of your direct client colleagues.
