Pros

The work-life balance is amazing.

Cons

I second reviews that've stated management is unprofessional, manipulative, etc. The management of this agency by far has the worst attitudes and passive aggressiveness I’ve ever had the displeasure of working with. I worked under a manager who would give convoluted feedback & instructions and expected me to properly execute. When the result didn’t meet her constantly evolving expectations, she became extremely passive aggressive, condescending, and would deep sigh — not only uncomfortable but demotivating. This management style can be mistaken for tough love, but as time went on, this registered as a means of taking out stress and anger on a subordinate with a hint of power tripping. She also didn’t think twice about angrily calling me out in front of everyone, which let me know that there are little to no repercussions for the mistreatment of employees. Previous (now deleted) reviews have brought attention to how boundaries aren’t respected, employees are treated like punching bags (I agree), and a situation where someone who holds a prominent position wasn’t held accountable for statements that didn’t align with the agency’s DEI commitments. Instead of addressing these concerns, they were cowardly removed. This reflects how things are brushed under the rug here, and the emphasis that’s placed on looking like a safe place instead of being one.

Our goal is to make Tier One a rewarding place to work. We are sorry you did not have that experience. For accountability and planning, we conduct an anonymous employee survey every year. The survey gathers feedback and addresses employee concerns about leadership and culture. Our late 2023 survey was very positive. We have used the data collected to further strengthen our culture in 2024. It is not possible for Tier One to remove a Glassdoor review. As explained in Glassdoor's user policy, review content on Glassdoor can only be removed by Glassdoor – and is removed when a review violates Glassdoor’s community guidelines and terms and conditions. Pros

I learned a lot at Tier One. I also made some lasting friendships.

Cons

I did learn a lot, but even if you express wanting to grow in a certain area, they will likely ignore it and pigeonhole you into what they want you to do. There's a major disconnect between the Boston and Chicago offices. Each location has completely different job functions and more often than not, neither office knows what's happening in the other (although Boston gets more recognition). Chicago management is unprofessional, emotionally manipulative, and causes distress amongst employees. Very hard to work with. The pay is horrible. There's an expectation for you to be passionate about your job and work overtime, yet they haven't adjusted their entry level salary in years, despite inflation. There's also zero room for growth. You will not get more responsibility, even if you've been there for nine years. Also, there's no paid maternity leave. Finally, turnover is extremely high.

Thank you for your response. We value feedback as an important tool for growth and appreciate the time you took to provide it. We would like to take a moment to address some of your concerns. But first, we are glad you feel you learned a lot while working at Tier One and made lasting friendships. We remain committed to providing a rewarding workplace that fosters ongoing professional development for our employees. After reviewing your concerns, we would like to share some of the ways they have been addressed in recent years. We moved to an agency-wide annual review process in 2020, with the goal of more clearly mapping out career paths for our employees. Our new process is more collaborative and puts an emphasis on addressing employees’ professional goals. Tier One is also always working hard to strengthen the relationships between offices through our All Hands Calls, culture activities, brainstorms, and more. Over the past 18 months, our remote work practices assisted with that goal and we resumed our office exchange program early this summer for fully vaccinated employees. We conduct regular salary and compensation reviews to be competitive with other agencies of our size and scope and have made salary adjustments accordingly when appropriate. We instituted a paid parental leave policy in response to an employee's need In 2018, which is detailed in our employee handbook. As with all feedback we receive, we will reflect on your suggestions to identify additional areas of improvement. Thank you for your comments, Marian Hughes, Co-Founder & Managing Partner Kathy Wilson, Co-Founder & Managing Partner Sue Parente, Co-Founder & Managing Partner

Pros

Made some great friends through trauma bonding. We still talk about our bad experiences.

Cons

Just wanted to double down on all the reviews that talk about how manipulative, out-of-touch, passive-aggressive, and borderline emotionally abusive management is. I thought I was crazy when I left the company but it turns out I was not alone in feeling that way, and it sounds like they've changed absolutely nothing. They've also deleted previous negative reviews and attempted to replace them with positive reviews that they clearly wrote themselves. I continue to see employees getting fired, only to be replaced by interns. They will wring you dry for cheap labor, only to kick you out the second you ask for a penny more. Do not work here.
