Toxic Culture - No Strategy Alignment

Pros

The company has attracted some bright minds globally - you'll work with brilliant people with incredible resumes and industry-leading ideas.

Cons

Everyone wants to lead - and no one wants to listen. The Executive team relies entirely on their direct reports to hold up the strategy and daily tasks - but provides no clear, aligned message to all. Departments regularly work against each other on opposing goals, and communication is consistently difficult on a daily basis. Hard conversations are a part of every meeting, and your calendar is overrun with meetings with no clear goals. Slide decks are rampant but action items are never clearly defined or assigned. Egos fight on public slack channels, gossip, criticism, and arguments over budget are a daily occurrence. The culture has fragmented EMEA and US employees, and European employees rely on American employees to pick up the slack after long and often-taken vacations. Benefits are not equitable between the two groups, leading to further hostility. DEIA actions are a farce and the response and accountability from leadership is non-existent.

Pros

- We have an interesting product that has great potential. - Some refocus happening now is much needed and an exciting opportunity. - There are several brilliant people across teams who are a pleasure to work with.

Cons

- Lack of accountability for senior leadership - there are some people who stay invincible no matter what they say or do. Employees are disincentivised to speak up because of power these people have. This breaks trust, which directly impacts employee work. - The usual problem of smart employees promoted to management without skill to manage. Not only does this happen, but again no accountability for their impact on direct reports, deliverables, or morale. What is more, these smart former solo workers try to keep control of their contributions while heavily focusing on building the hierarchy below them. Everyone loses. - It is a French tech startup, as opposed to a typical American start up. Sometimes it’s nice: a regular work week, teammates from around the world, etc. But that comes with a Parisian culture - i.e. normalise misogyny and much more sexism. These behaviours are not always obvious (though they are clear from some men); it is the microaggression that are a problem.

I work in a technical field at this company and unfortunately, I've encountered sexist behavior on a regular basis. All senior membership are men and they consistently disregard complaints of sexism. They don't intervene in toxic dynamics, leaving lower ranking women to clean up their messes. It's disheartening to see that the CTO, who is a member of our DEI charter, oversees the department where this seems to be most prevalent. While I care deeply about my colleagues and have a love for this company, I'm deeply disappointed by the prevalence of sexist behavior in the workplace. Despite complaints and concerns raised by myself and my female coworkers, senior management consistently disregards the issue and fails to intervene in toxic dynamics. Women are not recognized or given the same opportunities as our male counterparts. It's frustrating to see the company complain about not getting enough female candidates for positions while actively neglecting to advance the women already here in a meaningful way. Unfortunately, I don't have much hope that anything will change. I feel compelled to warn others about this company's lack of action and let my colleagues know that they're not alone. Unfortunately, I don't have much hope that anything will change, but I hope that future employees can make a more informed decision about joining this company.
