Pros

+ Great family-work-life balance, supported not only by benefits, but by the culture + Meaningful, impactful and one-of-a-kind type of work + Diverse and international + Great benefits: Pension, Tax free pay, Home leave, Excellent health insurance (like: REALLY good!) + Things seem to be improving (re: list of cons)...

Cons

- Majority of managers come from the technical field and underestimate the importance of soft skills. - No "expert" career progression (probably the reason for the above) - Politics permeate even the most mundane activities. - Career progression is nonexistant at its worse, very clunky and slow at its best. - Complex governance: Decisions and actions from the are sometimes schizophrenic - Administration seems unable to manage toxic employees and under performance (at all level) - Culture: codified class system (internal/external permanent/temporary D/P/G) - Golden handcuffs

Pros

It's a golden cage, especially if you're fixed term. WIPO's the richest UN agency and has a corporate feel. Beautiful buildings and outward work environment.

Cons

Corrupt and politicized management and promotions, scandals, toxicity galore, sexual harassment, incompetence, narcissism. HR treats employees like the enemy. DG rules the his kingdom with an iron fist. Rules mean nothing. Few fixed term staff, most showed up 20 years ago with few skills and never left nor learned. Everyone else works hard but don't bet on a promotion unless you're connected.
