Pros

Zeeco is very good at recruiting talented and dedicated employees. Pay is good for entry-level engineers. Interesting industry, and good opportunity to gain experience quickly.

Cons

My peers and I have come to describe employment at Zeeco as an abusive relationship. I have a dozen stories of former coworkers, GOOD employees who were pushed to their limits, given unsavory assignments far outside their job description, asked to behave unethically, unfairly compensated, etc. Personally, I was heavily overworked and made to feel that the world would collapse if I did not consistently put in long hours at the expense of my family. I observed a tremendous lack of appreciation toward countless coworkers who also worked long hours and made a lot of sacrifices for a company they felt a sense of loyalty toward but who did not return that same loyalty to its employees.

Pros

relaxed atmosphere and some good co-workers (those who have not quit)

Cons

You can clearly see that a family atmosphere used to exist. The people who have been there for 15 years talk about the times when hard work was rewarded and innovation was a part of the culture. Those times are long gone. Management only want "yes men". Those who disagree with even trivial decisions are quickly and relentless put down, ignored, and/or shamed. Management will completely disregard an idea if it comes from a subordinate, often not even attempting to listen to it (the exception is when they wait a week or so and claim it as their own idea). Management has succeeded by taking credit for the work of others and blaming every mistake on others. There is no room for professional growth as management are terrified of promoting competent people who could potentially threaten their position. The managers are mostly (but not entirely) good people at heart but have no training or skills in management. Roughly half of the employees carry the entire workload and are extremely overburdened. The other half spend most of their time getting other people to do their work for them or blaming others for their shortcomings. Field issues are continually ignored by office staff. Repeating issues in the field are completely ignored with little to no effort made to improve quality. Untested products are continually thrown into the field where R&D is done by those who have no input into design improvements. As soon as there is a basic understanding of how to make the design work, a completely different design is thrust upon the service people to figure out.

Pros

Zeeco quickly offers a lot of experience for right-out-of-school grads, unfortunately it is because you are "forced" to work 50+ hour weeks to complete projects on time. Projects are intentionally sold with reduced margins, and the project manager is expected to make up that difference at any cost, including their personal life. If you get into sales (applications), then you are expected to turn out quotes like a trained monkey instead of being an engineer like hired. Not much thought or creativity is appreciated outside of typical designs (again, we're engineers right?). Zeeco tends to promote good engineers with no leadership skills to management positions, then provide zero training or support to help them succeed in a role they have no prior experience in. You do get a lot of good travel benefits, but the joy quickly fades as you continually get last minute leave notice for an extended length trip with no return date.

Cons

Performance bonuses are conditional, with a clawback attached. Isn't it a bonus for work already performed/executed? It's not a retention or relocation bonus... Pay is sub-par for industry, peers, and for the amount of work required. Extra hours worked is necessary for any job that you want to excel at, but it shouldn't be expected, and you shouldn't be sneered at for leaving on time (on time = 10 hour work day) The downturn created a competitive atmosphere internally, and departments compete with each other to ensure they keep their own books positive. Creates a hostile environment between groups. The "ma and pop" environment that Zeeco wants so hard to retain just comes off as "old and outdated". Think steel industry in the 60's... do you want to work back then? They popped open a bottle of whiskey at their desk at 5:30, that's how they got through it. Zero structure, work practices, standards, etc. Everything is done on a whim and on the tribal knowledge on 1 or 2 people. Terrible at succession planning.
