The Tongass and Chugach National Forests, nonprofit partner Society of American Foresters, and presenting sponsor 84 Lumber, are excited to announce the 11 locations of the 2024 U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Whistle-Stop Tour starting in Alaska’s “First City,” Ketchikan, and continuing to its final stop on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol building. Every year, a different national forest is selected to provide a tree to appear on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol building for the holiday season. The 2024 tree will be coming from Alaska’s National Forests. The first and only previous U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree to come from Alaska was sent from the Chugach National Forest in 2015. This year, the tree will come from the Tongass National Forest – America’s largest national forest. The tree’s 4,000-mile journey from Wrangell, Alaska, to the U.S. Capitol will kick off on Oct. 30, 2024. Over three weeks, the tour will travel to the Lower 48 by sea and then by truck from the Pacific coast of the United States to the eastern seaboard. “This event is an opportunity to impact so many communities across the country and is a key piece of U.S. holiday tradition,” said Maggie Hardy, owner and CEO of 84 Lumber. “For those able to attend the whistle-stops, the sense of excitement and togetherness is terrific.”
Careers in Construction Month, a national campaign observed every October, raises awareness about careers in the construction industry. The construction industry is often seen through a traditional lens, where roles like general contractor, electrician or plumber dominate the conversation. But at 84 Lumber, one of the nation's leading building materials suppliers, careers in construction extend far beyond the job site. According to Joe Jena, director of talent acquisition at 84 Lumber, the company’s expanding presence across the U.S. offers unique career pathways in construction, ranging from yard worker to manager trainee, providing a broad array of options for anyone willing to roll up their sleeves and embrace hard work. Individuals have the opportunity to work directly at job sites or gain hands-on experience at manufacturing plants.” With a footprint in 33 states and growing, 84 Lumber offers countless opportunities across the country. From day one, new employees are given a chance to prove their capabilities and move up the ladder. The Manager Trainee program, in particular, is designed to take individuals with a passion for learning and leadership, providing them with the knowledge and tools necessary to succeed.

Hispanic Heritage Month begins on Sunday, September 15 and ends Tuesday, October 15, 2024. The month recognizes and celebrates the many contributions, diverse cultures, and histories of people of Latin American heritage living in the United States. 84 Lumber is proud to feature three of the company’s many outstanding associates: Luis Moscozo, outside sales coordinator at 84 Lumber’s Westminster, Maryland store; Outside Sales Representative Julio Chavez Jr. in Rockaway, New Jersey; and Jesus “Lucas” Ochoa, store manager, in Christiansburg, Virginia – associates who have achieved success and continue to help push the industry and company forward. “I think it's important that we celebrate [the month] because you want kids to grow up being proud of being Latino – I feel like it's a beautiful yearly reminder that a lot of people have come before you who changed their narrative for you to be here,” said Chavez Jr. “I feel that we do have a responsibility, as a Latin community, to keep paving ways for those that are afraid to ask, to be that voice.” “It makes you feel proud, remembering where you’ve come from. Siéntete orgulloso, nunca olvides de tus raíces. Feel proud, don’t forget about your roots. We need to remind our future kids where their family came from, that we have Hispanic blood, and teach them our language(s). Remembering this and how hard you’ve worked, how far you’ve come during this month is important to me.”
