A persistent disconnect between companies and investors limits capital flows into decarbonization projects. Effective climate transition planning can help close the divide. Securing financing is a significant roadblock for decarbonization projects, such as installing new energy technologies and developing new low-carbon products. The disconnect between investors and companies has two key components: valuation and communication. Done right, climate transition planning is an excellent tool for bridging the gap between companies and investors. It pushes companies to develop concrete roadmaps for achieving climate goals and helps them identify and create strong business cases that will convince investors. To make it work, investors also must invest in understanding the climate transition plans and business cases they are assessing. The gap between investors and companies around decarbonization projects has two key components; Valuation and Communication. Senior employees at Asian-Pacific companies are more committed and rate their company’s progress on sustainability higher than any other region, according to a recent ERM survey of C-suite members and managers. The ERM Transformation Survey found the region also wins on each sub-theme: climate, nature, and social. By contrast, companies from North America and Africa/Middle East were found to be the least assured about their company’s sustainability progress.

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is reshaping global sustainability expectations, and Pollution (E2) disclosures are a key challenge—especially for North American organizations with operations, products, or supply chains tied to the EU. Current site-level compliance with the regulations is not sufficient as the CSRD has requirements going beyond what already applies and increases site-level compliance requirements. For North American organizations, Pollution (E2) presents an opportunity to demonstrate leadership but also a significant compliance challenge. This is especially relevant in industries like manufacturing, pharma, tech, and consumer goods. Without a well-defined approach, companies risk falling behind in sustainability expectations critical to the EU market. Are you ready to bridge the gaps? Join ERM's CSRD subject matter experts on January 22, 2025, for an exclusive free webinar.
Thousands of major companies have committed to climate action. While their commitments are real, many need help achieving the transformational change required to achieve their ambitions. This is why ERM is proud to have convened the Council on Sustainability Transformation. The Council comprises highly experienced and well-respected leaders from corporations, governments, and academia focused on accelerating private sector action on critical sustainability challenges. These include; Peter Agnefjäll, Mark Cutifani, Connie Hedegaard, Naoko Ishii, Hixonia Nyasulu, Feike Sijbesma and Johannes Teyssen. Collectively, the Council will look at obstacles to progress, marshaling the experience of its members and other experts to develop recommendations on how to overcome them and future-proof businesses. Through global forums, workshops, and campaigns, they will inform the public and private sectors about the importance of sustainability, helping to raise awareness and empowering individuals and organizations to take actionable steps towards a more sustainable future. The Council will also issue a series of papers exploring topics relevant to accelerated corporate action on sustainability.
