Achieve an extraordinary future by creating context

The lesson this week came from my business coach. To maintain the energy required to achieve an extraordinary future, I have to recreate this future in words and actions everyday. This was a massive insight. The future I want is actually my context. As we learn in leadership development at Earls, "context is decisive."

  • "For any outcome you want, there is a way of being and acting that can get it for you. You just have to be willing to do it." - Mo Jessa, President Earls Kitchen + Bar: http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vIQNQ

Be willing to do the work to get the outcome you want

If we start with such caveats, we have little chance to build lifelong relationships. When people ask me for advice on how to deal with failure, I always go back to the same adage: "For any outcome you want, there is a way of being and acting that can get it for you.

  • "If you aren't practicing being present, you are being run by its mechanics. I caught my listening and turned it into possibility. That is the power of presence." - Mo Jessa, President Earls Kitchen + Bar: http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vIQcG

  • "Wayne Gretzky said the difference between stars and superstars was that superstars find a way to win, repeatedly. How simple." - Mo Jessa, President Earls Kitchen + Bar: http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vIQ57

Take action (even when you don't feel like it)

We promise our partners that People Grow Here. The comfort zone is nice but things rarely grow there. By now you understand taking 100% responsibility for your outcomes is the source of power and choice, the critical element to creating a chosen future and the main lesson we promise to teach our partners at Earls.

  • "To get respect, we must respect others first. To feel heard, we must listen to others first." - Mo Jessa, President Earls Kitchen + Bar: http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vIIzG

Three ways to live out our beliefs at Earls

This week, in return for a nominal sponsorship of an Olympian to support his training to row for Team Canada in Brazil, I asked Maxwell Latimer to make a presentation to the executive team. Few human beings make it to such an elite level but it's even more special that this 22-year old graduated from my son's school where his dad coaches rowing to this day.

  • "We are dying everyday. Living is essentially a terminal illness. How much time do we have? Legacy matters. We believe in people, we believe anyone can be a leader." - Mo Jessa, President Earls Kitchen + Bar: http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vII0q

Create magic by executing the basics well

Last week, an action rang a truth bell from our operations team. Several departments have worked hard to operationalize recipes and costs for 2016. Among many key choices, they decided to stop spending an exorbitant $15 on fancy Peugeot salt and pepper grinders we put on every table and allow money for better ingredients and increased pay.

  • People across Earls Kitchen + Bar completed 1, 2 or 3 goals they had set out at the beginning of 2015 and managed to complete by the end of the year. They shared their best tip below so you too can be successful this year. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vImqe

Earls Kitchen + Bar - What do you want to make time for in 2016?

It's that time of year again, where we set our intentions and goals for the next year in hopes to make it the best year yet. We just finished a "12 tips to go...

  • "Every time I've gone back to a relationship that's not working, from the viewpoint of integrity, it has always turned out that I haven't honoured my word." - Mo Jessa, President Earls Kitchen + Bar: http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vImGs

Invest in building relationships to become your future best self

I'd like to frame this conversation around our indispensable foundation of leadership at Earls: Integrity.? We use Michael Jensen's article on Integrity which defines it as a positive phenomenon, not rooted in good or bad but rather "what it takes for a person to be whole and complete."

  • "[Earls] future is being inspirational, self-fulfilled and unleashing the power of possibility in others." - Mo Jessa, President Earls Kitchen + Bar: http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vImHm

Live in to your created future by learning from your past

At Earls, Our Vision is to be the most loved and best run restaurant in North America. We are not there yet. I was reminded this week that this vision is actually a "created future."
