Why are our robotic-assisted surgical systems called da Vinci? The name pays homage to Leonardo da Vinci, the 15th century inventor, painter, philosopher, and Renaissance man. Leonardo da Vinci is widely known for advancing the study of human anatomy. He was also intrigued by mechanics and automation, which eventually led to the design of the first known robot, “Leonardo’s Robot,” which was likely made around the year 1495.
This month, Intuitive and our BLACK at Intuitive Employee Resource Group (ERG) celebrated Black History Month with the theme: “The Color Within.” Together, employees explored how our experiences shape identity and spotlighted resources for well-being. Highlights from the month: Giving back: With support from the Intuitive Foundation, employees joined a wellness campaign to fundraise for Black Girls Smile, an organization that promotes mental health support for Black women and girls. With employee participation, BLACK is on track to raise more than $20,000. Community support: At our Sunnyvale, CA, and Peachtree Corners, GA sites, employees packed 700+ lunches for hashtag#HashtagLunchbag, an organization helping fight food insecurity. Joining the conversation: Employees from across the business engaged in various events aimed at personal and professional growth. 🔹 At “Journey to Greatness: Embracing Power & Presence,” co-sponsored by the BLACK and the Women Intuitive Network ERGs, motivational speaker Maria Moss empowered employees to recognize their unique value. 🔹 Sherice Morris, a 20-year Intuitive veteran, shared her journey of stepping back to focus on well-being, advising, “You can’t pour from an empty cup. Seek help when you need it. If you want to show up to work, you have to help yourself.” Thanks to the BLACK ERG and allies across the company for a meaningful and inspiring Black History Month!

Recently at our Annual Commercial Meeting in Prague, we spoke with two inspiring patients about their experiences with robotic-assisted surgery. Here’s some of what they had to say: “Da Vinci surgery has given me back a measure of freedom from pain. I got up on the first day, even though I had a complex procedure. The recovery phase went well and I even left the hospital earlier than planned. My scars are barely visible. This is of course not as relevant as they are part of life, but it is nice to know how small they have remained. ”— Biruta Kowatzky, patient “I had two surgeries this year. One was unplanned. I had appendicitis, and that was the laparoscopic surgery. The recovery time—the real recovery, where I couldn’t do anything—was two weeks. Then six weeks after that before I really got back to living my life. Whereas with the da Vinci surgery, I was able to get back to my life after four days.
