This summer, we launched a #DiversityChampion Summer Internship Program in Hong Kong in collaboration with Herbert Smith Freehills and Hyatt Hotels Corporation. The interactive program is the first cross-industry internship of its kind in Hong Kong, and aims to provide students with exposure to different industries and career paths, all while promoting Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in the workplace.
Last week, Megan Kaiser, Director, Business Process Improvement at John Hancock, won the 2021 Margaret Divver Leadership Award for her efforts and commitment to the advancement of women in the workplace. Megan shared some thoughts with us on the importance of celebrating this day and carrying the spirit of it in everything we do year round, as well as how her experience at John Hancock and as part of our Global Women's Alliance employee resource group has helped shape her career.
Meet Cara, Director of Product Development, who has accomplished many things in the DEI space with us. In 2017, she was a founding member and the co-chair of VIBE (Valuing the Inclusion of Black Experiences) to support the advancement and development of black employees. Since 2018, she’s been a member of the GWA (Global Women’s Alliance) as a committee member, successfully planning many events such as their annual year end event and International Women’s Week, that help to close the gender gap and promote the advancement of women. “I think there’s something special about being part of a transformation from the ground up, and Manulife has allowed me to do that”. Every day, we’re helping to build a more digital and innovative industry. From five-star apps to frictionless transactions, we’re developing next-generation capabilities for all our stakeholders. As a Technology Project Specialist, Rhys Hollis is working on automating our new employee onboarding process, building best in class portals and API’s with the goal of creating a great ‘First 100 Day’ employee experience. It’s just one of the ways that we’re continuously innovating. Work with us.
Make way for the #Pride Parade! Yesterday we joined Pride Toronto’s Virtual Pride Parade in celebration of our LGBTQ+2 employees and the LGBTQ+2 community as a whole. Thanks to everyone who joined in to show their #ManulifePROUD!
For the second year in a row we’re giving our 37,000 employees globally a "Thank You Day" off to show how much we appreciate all their hard work. To our employees: thank you for continuing to serve our customers and helping people make decisions easier and lives better.
“Private sector employers should think more broadly about summer jobs as both a means to fill critical vacancies as well as development opportunities for youth who are the region’s future workforce.” Tom Crohan, VP & Counsel, John Hancock Corporate Responsibility, co-penned an op-ed in the Boston Business Journal describing the summer jobs imperative for young people and how employers can get involved to help improve a range of social outcomes. For the fourteenth year our MLK Scholars program is proud to provide more than 600 Boston teens with a summer job and paycheck, digital financial capability training, and leadership development forums.
June is Pride month, but we’re #ManulifePROUD year-round. We’re fostering a working environment where all our employees feel accepted, valued, and included, because we believe that strength lies in embracing our differences. This year, for the second year in a row, we’ll be planning 100% virtual Pride celebrations for our employees. How will you be celebrating Pride this year?
The devastating impact of the pandemic, along with so many challenging events that have taken place over the past year, have tested us all. While our global team has come together to support each other and share our humanity, we realize that sometimes that is not enough. We’re providing employees with events and resources to encourage making time to rest, reflect and recharge this #MentalHealthMonth, from guided meditations and yoga to virtual seminars on finding and maintaining balance.
Last week, we celebrated our winning team in style with our second annual Global Employee Forum. One of the biggest highlights of the session was the surprise introduction of basketball legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson for a coffee chat with our CEO Roy Gori. Magic and Roy discussed Magic’s role models growing up in Lansing, Michigan, his rivalry with Larry Bird, and how he made the transition from super star on the court to successful CEO in the business world. It truly was a must-see event!
