When a patient is fighting for their life, sometimes cancer isn't even their biggest problem. Sue Austin knows this lesson from her 30 years as a radiation therapist. Her journey began with a simple observation: a desire for the daily connection and camaraderie she saw between therapists and patients. “You see them every day for weeks. That bond matters,” she says. She’s seen patients face unimaginable challenges — some battling cancer while caring for young children, others struggling with homelessness or substance use disorders. Their attitude, their strength — it’s humbling, she says. Over the decades, Sue has witnessed technology evolve dramatically, helping to pioneer advanced systems. Yet, she still believes the heart of healing is still the human connection. Her longevity has given her a deep well of wisdom, teaching her to slow down and truly see how someone is doing. Sue's career is a testament to the power of compassion, resilience and the irreplaceable value of experience in healthcare. What keeps her motivated, after all these years? “The patients. The coworkers. The relationships.” Her story is a reminder that in health care, longevity brings a depth of insight that truly makes a lasting impact.

We're proud to announce the opening of a new pediatric cardiology clinic in Central Iowa, a strategic partnership with Children’s Nebraska’s Criss Heart Center, a regional leader in pediatric cardiac care. This new clinic, located on the Iowa Methodist Medical Center campus, brings expert, individualized cardiology services closer to our patients and families. Jill Shivapour, MD, a Des Moines-based cardiologist, will guide patients from diagnosis through follow-up for congenital heart defects, arrhythmias, murmurs and more.

Tara began her career as a respiratory therapist at UnityPoint Health in 1995. "It was more than a job. It was where my passion for helping others truly came to life," she shared. Her passion drove her back to school, leading to new roles in patient safety and risk management. While she sometimes misses direct patient care, she values her new role just as deeply. "I get to ensure our systems and teams work efficiently, safely and with the patient at the center of everything." After 30 years in health care, one particular moment stands out: receiving a handwritten note from a physician thanking her for saving a patient's life.
