ur team had an incredible time at last month’s Society of American Foresters National Convention in Colorado! We spent the week learning from our peers, networking and developing as professionals through field tours, educational sessions and workshops. We’re looking forward to seeing our forestry friends at next year’s conference in Hartford, Connecticut. #SAF24
September 30 is an important day in Canada when we recognize and observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day. This day was formally established as a Canadian federal holiday in 2021 to reflect on the painful and lasting impacts of residential schools on Indigenous people, and to honor survivors, their families and our communities. Throughout the past weekend, a number of our teams and sites across Canada took part in activities to commemorate, learn and raise awareness about this history.
Building a comprehensive greenhouse gas inventory is an important first step for any organization with net-zero ambitions. Today, with hashtag#ClimateWeek conversations ongoing, we’re sharing more about how we do that here at Weyerhaeuser and calling for progress toward a globally accepted forest carbon accounting standard with the release of our GHG Inventory Principles. These principles provide a clear, science-based approach to accounting for the carbon impact of forests and forest products. #naturalclimatesolutions
"I consider myself incredibly lucky to be part of a first-rate, high-performing organization," says Chris Beaudette, a geographic information system (GIS) architect based at our Seattle headquarters. "Everyone I work with across so many teams is simply the best at what they do. Everyone shows up every day ready to get stuff done with a positive attitude, focused bearing and a healthy sense of humor (which is so important!). There’s not a single exception across all teams I work with — and there are many teams! I'm especially appreciative of the GIS Services team, because I’ve learned so much from them. Geospatial is hands down the coolest tech, and our team is awesome at it." For his focus on innovation and working together, Chris was awarded a 2023 Truly Great Award. #MeetOurPeople #TheWeyerhaeuserWay
Before joining Weyerhaeuser as conservation director last year, Alex Littlejohn worked for The Nature Conservancy in his home state of Mississippi. While he loved his job, after more than 12 years at the global environmental nonprofit, Alex decided it was time for a new challenge and applied for the newly created role he now holds. One year later, Alex spends his days developing and implementing conservation strategies to grow our Corporate Development organization and Natural Climate Solutions business, building partnerships with conservation groups and even doing much of what he enjoyed at TNC. “My favorite part of the job at TNC was land acquisitions,” he says. “At Weyerhaeuser, I get to keep working on those types of conservation transactions, but across a much different footprint and from a different perspective. To me, it’s nothing short of an opportunity of a lifetime.” #TheWeyerhaeuserWay #meetourpeople #conservation
“We are proud to partner with World Climate Foundation for the World Biodiversity Summit, where a broad range of perspectives will be represented. The Summit offers a great opportunity to exchange ideas with leaders who share Weyerhaeuser’s commitment to making a positive climate impact.” – Russell Hagen, Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer. Join us on September 26 during hashtag#ClimateWeekNYC, where cross-sector leaders and decision-makers from a variety of sectors will discuss how to deliver climate impact through hashtag#naturebasedsolutions. Russell Hagen will also share his insights as a speaker at hashtag#WBS2024 during the session on valuing natural capital. We hope to see you there! #WorldClimateFoundation #ClimateWeekNYC
Forest carbon projects aren’t just for the largest timberland owners. As the benefits of working forests are increasingly understood, landowners of all sizes are taking a closer look at how trees can factor in the global response to climate change. Our own Alicia Robbins explored the topic with professors Shaun Tanger and Brady Self on the latest episode of Timber University. #naturalclimatesolutions
Strong relationships are at the cultural core of our sawmill in Raymond, Washington. They're the bonds that connect employees to each other and the community — and one of the first things leaders mention when discussing the mill's improved safety performance or the recent selection of Raymond as our second THRIVE community, a distinction that comes with a $1 million investment over the next several years. "Relationship building is a main pillar of our safety strategy," says Spencer Headley, mill manager. "It starts on the mill floor, with lots of interactions between leaders and hourly employees, and it's deepened by the many connections we all share within our community." Learn more about Raymond's culture of caring and how it's driving improvements at the mill and in the community. #TheWeyerhaeuserWay
On Feb. 21, employees at our engineered wood products plant in Natchitoches, Louisiana, streamed into the parking lot filled with decorated tents, each one overflowing with the mouthwatering scent of hot gumbo. It was the plant’s fifth-annual "Rouxin’ for the Relay" event, a friendly competition between teams in each department to craft the tastiest gumbo to raise money for the American Cancer Society. “It’s hot most of the year here, so cooking and eating gumbo is best enjoyed in winter, when the weather is mild,” says Shonna Sullivan, senior buyer for our facilities in Natchitoches and nearby Dodson, Louisiana, who helped organize the competition. “A February event also stretches out the amount of time we raise money leading up to the full Relay for Life, which boosts our giving totals.” #TheWeyerhaeuserWay
Last fall, we teamed up with our partners at Habitat for Humanity International to launch the inaugural Weyerhaeuser Innovation Challenge and invited Habitat affiliates from across the country to submit their best ideas for using sustainable wood products to increase access to affordable, high-quality homes. From dozens of entries, we selected six winners and awarded them each $15,000 to implement their ideas. Read more about their projects and the positive impact innovations sparked by the challenge could have on the industry. #TheWeyerhaeuserWay #innovation https://www.weyerhaeuser.com/blog/innovation-habitat-for-humanity-2024/
