How are senior leaders perceived at Backcountry?

      Pros

You’ll make great friends and learn to be agile in your work.

      Cons

Don’t bother wasting your time. Just run. Everyone is overworked due to high turnover rates, layoffs, and no backfills. The CEO will not listen to you, you cannot challenge any ideas, there is no trust put in you to do your job, and the executive leadership team is just a bunch of old people with big egos. You’ll be expected to perform the work of 5 people only to be told it’s wrong. The CEO has lead multiple big brands to mass layoffs and failure, and she’s doing the same here. She does not know how to lead, nor do the leaders she puts in place. She likely can’t leave because she has a proven track record of imploding the brands she works for. Nobody has respect for their leaders here due to their lack of respect for their workers. The executive team will say the grass isn’t always greener and this is a great place to work so you should do your part better. But there is greener grass outside of this company. Don’t ignore the reviews here. I know it can be enticing to work for a big brand, but run far away. There’s a reason they’re trying to coerce us into writing good reviews to save face.

      Pros

My coworkers are awesome, talented, and kindhearted. I genuinely enjoy collaborating with my team. I feel like I got ten years of experience in right out of the gate due to Backcountry’s tendencies to reinvent the wheel and restructure every few months. There is absolutely no institutional knowledge and people are constantly laid off and quitting, so your job description quickly becomes outdated as you pick up extra responsibilities to stay afloat. You get a lot of experience building out multiple strategies because Backcountry can’t stick with a plan for more than a few months, and as soon as the next shiny objective catches the CEO’s eye then its time to derail and chase it… or else. Overall, my time at Backcountry made me a much more competitive and experienced candidate for my next role.

      Cons

The future of the company is uncertain and years of poor business decisions made by the executive team have compounded into a classic downward spiral. I lost respect for the CEO as a business leader after she berated the anonymous feedback received from the employee surveys during an all-hands meeting. A CEO that cares about creating a safe culture would not say the things that she did, especially in front of the entire staff. I don’t see things getting better at Backcountry anytime soon, if ever.

      Pros

Fun space to work, beautiful location, encouraged to go outside during the work day, nice support network and benefits, fun subject matter

      Cons

Tracking software, 6 RIFS in the past 3 months, lack of leadership, benefits are worse after the acquisition, culture is dead. It's like you're drinking from a fire hose and the house is burning down, and your boss was just fired.

      Pros

Summer Fridays, meaning you have every other summer Friday off. Discounts on gear, the people who work there.

      Cons

Work life balance does not exist. The leadership team is very disconnected from the workload that it takes for all those not on leadership. Their expectations are unrealistic. They like to hire young and pay low. They are happy to burn you out and have you leave.

      Pros

Great people to work with that share common interests.

      Cons

Consistent leadership and management changes. Low pay and limited upward mobility. Increasingly poor morale throughout the company. Ownership under CSC implemented productivity tracking software in computers and took away attractive benefits.

Great people, bad pay & leadership

      Pros

      - Amazing coworkers: I met a lot of passionate, talented people in my time at BC. - Gear access & discounts: Employee discount on almost anything on the site, plus pro deals. They have changed the discount a little bit in the last 1-2yrs as well so it's not as good as it used to be.

      Cons

      - Low pay & lack of raises: Staying in & excelling at a role at BC doesn't guarantee any increase. For multiple years in a row they did not give any raises to employees in the Park City office, while giving raises to employees in the warehouse and customer service office. Pay, especially for entry level positions has increased a little over the last 5 years, but other employees did not receive anything. - High turnover & many RIFs since 2020: There is a ton of midlevel turnover, and in the past few years a ton of long tenured employees (10+ years) have gotten fed up with the way things were going and pursued better opportunities, taking a ton of knowledge and experience with them. This could have been avoided by treating people better and giving out increases, but all proposals for raises were denied by upper management. There also have been 5+ RIFs since March 2020, cutting valuable employees and positions which helped the company. One RIF in 2024 cut a couple dozen employees with an average tenure of 10-15yrs just to get rid of higher paid workers.
