False Promises, Overwork, and Incompetent Management at PetSmart

      Warehouse worker

      CEO approval
      Business outlook

      Pros

High pay that comes at a high cost

      Cons

Title: Beware: False Promises, Overwork, and Incompetent Management at PetSmart I joined PetSmart with high hopes for career growth and a promising future. However, my experience was nothing short of a nightmare. From the very beginning, the promises made by HR about opportunities and inclusivity turned out to be nothing but a facade. The warehouse team at PetSmart will deceive you with promises of growth, only to exploit your labor to the fullest extent before discarding you like yesterday's news. Don't be fooled into thinking you'll climb the corporate ladder here; they'll keep shifting the goalposts until they find an excuse to terminate you. Management is shockingly incompetent. Instead of addressing the glaring issues within the company, they choose to bury their heads in the sand and blame the astronomical turnover rate on "hard work." In reality, the lack of support and the constant pressure to meet unattainable quotas lead to a revolving door of employees. If you're desperate for employment, approach this job with the same temporary mindset they have towards you. Work until you can't bear it any longer, then move on. But take my advice: steer clear of PetSmart. You'll find yourself facing unjust disciplinary actions for rules that were never properly communicated, forced to chase unattainable targets, and ultimately replaced with a new hire the moment you falter. Save yourself the stress and frustration. PetSmart is a sinking ship with a toxic work environment and management that couldn't care less about its employees' well-being or professional growth. Look elsewhere for a job where your hard work is valued and your future is respected.

      Pros

the pay is good, but you max out in 2 years.

      Cons

maxing out on pay in 2 years. very strict, but supervisors/management make exceptions for certain employees. panic management at its finest. (working extra hours when not necessary, just to go home early the next day because of lack of work) (being mandated for overtime just to be sent home after a few hours on your overtime day because there's not enough work.) most of the supervisors are not very friendly. during the hiring process they stress to new hires to tell on fellow employees for very petty things. micromanagement supervisors will create conflict between employees over rate and audits. public humiliation runs rampant. employees being called out over speakers for the whole warehouse to hear.

      Pros

Weekly pay, corporate benefits (insurance, 401k, discount programs) Decent employee discount

      Cons

Head Management at 1895 is not supportive whatsoever, The store leader holds personal grudges against individuals who speak out or challenge her on her management style. The new store operating model makes it very easy for management to overwork their groomers and offer them little to no support at times, constantly overbooking people and making them sacrifice quality or occasionally safety to get it all done. This new model also makes it incredibly easy for PS managers to get rid of anyone they particularly don't like.

      Pros

The type of co-workers the workplace attracts is wonderful, to be accepted and to unanimously despise the Management and Owner

      Cons

The management disregards the vast majority of their employees needs, even after going through the exhausting and long process to have official paperwork. The owner and managers continue to schedule poorly, placing more than 1 employee in roles they have distinctly made clear that they shouldn't be.

      Pros

Leadership team is fantastic! They are always available and helpful with answers to questions. The company has great support partners too. I've worked with other companies and sometimes you feel like you work for them. Here its a total team effort and we all help one another out.

      Cons

Some of the operational items are a little behind the times. This is something I brought up and they walked through the reason why things are set up a certain way and provided updates on changes coming up to improve the process.

      Decent pay - fun environment

      Pros

My favorite part of this job was interacting with the animals and having great repeat customers. You will form connections with people and their pets since they are coming on a regular basis. You get to interact with a variety of critters. My goal was to provide a safe environment where families can ask for advice.

      Cons

New management unfortunately ruined this job for me.

Very Dissapointing - The Job Doesn't Exist

      Retail store manager
      Former employee

      Business outlook

      Pros

      * I haven't worked here; that is the only reason I gave it 2 stars instead of one. It may be great once you get in. This review is on their hiring process.

      Cons

I went through one of the longest application processes I have ever seen, with tax information, a personality test, a resume upload, and then was required to fill out my resume again on their site manually. I had to fill out a form with every house I have lived in for the past ten years and a bunch of other random information. It took me probably 2-3 hours to get through it all. Fast forward, I get a call from PetSmart hiring, and they inform me there are no actual openings for the job I applied for, and that PetSmart likes to keep a lot of job listings active to "recruit great talent" even when there is nothing available in the position you are applying for. They then told me I could fill out ANOTHER application for a job that DOES exist, that has half the pay of the first one. Huge slap in the face and a waste of time. I would recommend calling them to find out if the job actually exists before dedicating an afternoon to it.

      Pros

      - 15% Discount on everything - New associate tier lets you rack up points fairly easy - Taking care of animals leads you into other animal handling / welfare jobs

      Cons

      - Company constantly cuts hours - Management makes or breaks a place* - *Treated unfairly if you aren't management's favorite - You won't get the hours you request - ALK isn't even a leader, you're essentially the errand person

      Cons

The management is oftentimes very Petty and The pet Care standards promote improper and unhealthy care of animals for example underfeeding reptiles and when you question it you get your hours cut in retaliation They promote benefits as one of the hiring perks benefits are only provided to full-time associates which is limited to management only.

      Pros

Easy job, you get to be around dogs all day, and the managers aren't awful.

      Cons

You get wet (a lot) understaffed at times so you'd be running around all day trying to bathe 20 dogs in a timely manner, while also doing walk in nail trims.
