The entire process was easy going and the people I spoke with were friendly. The first interview was a phone screen with HR. No questions about the work could be answered there but information about the organization was fine. They were looking for a junior which did not match with my salary expectation. They did not provide any budget or indication of their expectations. I got the feeling they did not know exactly what they were looking for, but decided to still plan a second interview since that might have just been HR not knowing the tech very well. The second interview was with the hiring manager and the same HR from the phone screen. The hiring manager explained that they are planning to build a team that would be responsible for internal libraries and that they would eventually be guiding the other dev teams in using internal tooling. The team was fairly young and quite small. This lead me to believe they were looking for someone with more experience since library code and dev support would only really be useful if it solves problems other devs will run into. After 3 conversations and a handful of emails, my salary expectation was not attainable for them. 2 things stood out to me. Not a single time in all the communication did they provide any salary indication. My github was not looked at. All in all the process was pleasant but a lot of wasted time could have been avoided, had they told me their salary budget after the first screen (or even in the job ad).
