I had an interview at the University of Virginia. The guy was great. It was only 30 minutes so it was just an easy technical question. Then, I had an on-site interview.
Every thing was fairly normal (your usual what's on your resume, solve this coding problem, tell me about a project, etc. ), except for the last interview. The last interviewer questioned if I wanted to be there, if I wanted the job. I assured him I want the job, which is why I'm here after 3-4 other interviews. He then asked if I needed coffee or if I wanted to wash my face. I explained to him that I was simply tired from days of final exams and rushing to this interview after my last exam. He then told me to speak with more energy.
He asked if I've been applying to other companies and why I don't have a job yet. I felt this was slightly unprofessional but I entertained him. I explained to him that between the need for visa sponsorship and spending my summers in the military, I've had troubles getting companies interested in me. He started lecturing me on how everyone has their unseen difficulties.
I tried my best to turn that awkward situation around but it is concerning that he came into this interview with preset notions of the kind of person I am. Maybe he spoke for me at the hiring interview, maybe he didn't. Doesn't matter. It was a poor experience. There are better ways to test how someone fairs under pressure and criticism.
