I applied online. I interviewed at Amazon (Bengaluru) in Oct 2021
Interview
I applied for several positions at Amazon Worldwide. From there my resume got selected for SDE 1 at Amazon Karnataka and SDE 2 Ireland.
They sent me assessment link on hackerrank to complete within a week. The online assessment round had 2 parts -
1. 2 Coding questions and respective solution approach and complexity for 105 minutes.
2. Work time flow questions - mostly work related behavioural questions for 15 minutes.
I completed first coding question and passed all test cases. Also I nicely wrote solution approach and complexity analysis.
Second coding question, I passed 12 out 17 test cases and wrote solution approach and complexity in simple way. Because I had less time at the end so I couldn’t enhance second question to pass all test case.
Right after an hour, I got mail that they will not move me forward for this role. Hence I was rejected.
I thought passing one question completely and another more than 50% should be accepted to move to next round but I don’t know if they want a candidate to solve all questions and pass all test cases for all questions.
The above explanation is both for Karnataka and Ireland location online assessment in Amazon.
Interview questions [2]
Question 1
Upgrade Junction Box - Return a sorted list of junction boxes. This question is present in Leetcode as Reorder Data In Logs File.
Optimal Route Pairs - Find the optimal list of route pairs that sums to or less than given maximum distance allowed to travel. There are pairs of forward and backward routes and a maximum distance that an airplane can travel. We need to find pair of forward and backward route whose distance sum is <= maximum distance an airplane can travel.
Surprisingly easy — I expected tougher questions, but the coding round felt more like a warm-up. The main challenge was a DSA problem about counting islands in a 2D grid, which led to a discussion on DFS versus BFS and handling large grids. Funny enough, I had revisited that exact type of question while prepping on PracHub, which made me feel more confident. The interview wrapped up with a behavioral round, and I accepted an offer, but ultimately decided to decline it for another opportunity. Overall, it was a smooth experience.

Question 1
Number of Islands — given a 2D grid of '1's (land) and '0's (water), count the number of connected islands. Walk through DFS vs BFS, and discuss how to avoid revisiting cells (in-place mutation vs visited set) and what changes if the grid is huge and must stream from disk.
It started with an OA, and then after a few weeks, I got invited to four rounds of interviews: technical and behavioral at 3 of the 4, and behavioral only at one.
Um teste de código online, se aprovado, vai para o loop. O loop é 4 entrevistas seguidas, duas em inglês e duas em português. 3 entrevistas técnicas de código, todas as 4 têm pergunta de liderança.
