      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through other source. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon in Nov 2021

      Interview

A BIE reached out to me on LinkedIn late October 2021, I interviewed with him mid November 2021. I did not meet with a recruiter, just sent over my availability received an email with a link for a video interview with the hiring team lead and a link for a live code test(did not say if it was SQL or a different language). I wasn’t sure if this was going to be an initial discussion about the company/position so I brushed up on my SQL and practiced a few behavioral questions in the STAR interview method. When I joined the call, the team lead doing the interview did not have his camera on. He started by giving a sentence or so about the team and mentioned he had been on the team for a year and at the company for 2. Then I gave him a high level introduction of myself. Then we moved on to the coding questions. It was two very basic and easy SQL questions. As I was coding them he kept interrupting and mentioning that stuff was wrong when I hadn’t even gotten to that point of the code yet. For example one of the questions needed a left join, I start typing out the join and join conditions and before I even got the chance to type out left join he was telling me that records would be dropped the way the code was. When I was working on the 2nd SQL question he was adamant that the code would not output the desired results(it did) and kept asking me to start over. I had to type out an example and walk him through the code multiple times for him to realize it was correct and apologize. After I finished the second SQL question he closed out the live code window and asked if I had any questions. He did not give much background into the position when we started so I asked some questions related to their data sources, technologies they used, and stakeholders they work with. I was shocked to hear that they were using data sources as large as 300 Billion records a month and that some of their visualization/reporting to executives is done through Excel. I also asked what the biggest issue the team was facing was and he said “hiring”, that they couldn’t hire people fast enough and the team was only 50% staffed. He was awkward to talk to so after a few questions I mentioned that was all I had and he just said thank you for the time and hung up. He asked no questions about my prior experience or technical skills and ask no behavior based questions. The position is in another state so I would need to relocate, there was no discussion about relocation or any other benefits/perks the company offers. The whole experience was very awkward, unprofessional and left a bad taste in my mouth. I was expecting so much more from a FAANG company as they expect you to be a top notch candidate and it was surprising how bad the interviewer was and how they are still using “outdated” technology for reporting. I left that interview with no clue about the company the team the work the position does but knowing I 100% do not want it.
