I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon (Seattle, WA) in Jun 2015
Interview
30-45 min phone screen that consisted of mainly personality questions. A little bit on my background and the technologies that I have worked with. Explanation of the group and position that the interview is for.
Timed, 2 hour, assessment test that consisted of one major question that was broken out into 5 parts. The implemented solution must obviously address the main problem while addressing all of the other parts of the question. It was a little frustrating that the "approved" languages were: Java, Python, Ruby and C++. But the sample code provided was in JavaScript and the problem required a JavaScript implementation. So, I wrote my implementation in JavaScript and sent a followup email to the Amazon recruiter explaining what and why I wrote it in JavaScript. She responded back stating that JavaScript was added to the list of languages.
The onsite interview was pretty long, and apparently they had recently trimmed off a couple of hours. I was there for 6 hours and interviewed for 5 of them. I did sign a non-disclosure and will honor my agreement to not discuss what was asked/discussed in during the interview process onsite. I will say that it was in very in-depth; so make sure that you do your homework. Amazon does a really good job of providing a lot of documentation to help acclimate you to the interview process so please read it as it is important. Also, for the love of all things holy, know the time complexity of the code that you write!
I have not received any word on whether or not they plan to proceed with me.

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Amazon in Sept 2018
Interview
I applied online and within a week I received an email to set up an initial phone screen. Two weeks later we had our phone interview, testing basic web-debugging skills and writing a simple function in JavaScript.
The one-hour phone screen was not especially difficult, so it was quite unfortunate to hear I was not selected. I heard back within one business day.
The staff were polite and professional throughout the process. Confidence is key (and perhaps a reason I was not selected). Don't vocalize your uncertainties - commit to the answers you think are best.
