      Senior Product Designer Interview

      17 Nov 2018
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Asana in Oct 2018

      Interview

External recruiter reached out on LinkedIn and said that the head of design had recently seen my profile and wanted to connect. He mentioned some of the team would be in my area holding interviews in different markets (outside of the Bay Area) in a couple of weeks. I emailed some details about my background and experience and we eventually set up a call. The call was pretty straightforward screening, though it did go a bit deeper than most recruiter calls (touching on particular project work, dealing with difficult situations etc..) and was less focused on answering my questions / selling the company to me. All-in-all, pretty routine. At the end of the call, I was intrigued and the role/company seemed very similar to my current company. He said he would follow up shortly with next steps. Several days later, he followed up saying he was very excited to connect me with the team to discuss next steps and interview scheduling. That's where things went downhill. In the email, he also said he was CC'ing an internal recruiter who would reach out and take over from there. I heard nothing for a few days, and as the time period the team was supposed to be in town approached, I decided to follow up to see if the wires had got crossed. I then realized he hadn't actually CC'd the internal recruiter on the email so I reached out again informing him and re-stating that I was interested in moving forward. Several more days pass, no response. At this point, it is now the time period the team was in town and my calendar was getting pretty booked up. Despite the red flags, I decided to reach out again, this time on LinkedIn where he had first made contact, asking for clarification. Crickets again. It's a month or so and no one has reached out. I was frankly pretty shocked by the level of disrespect for my time that the recruiter displayed. From the outside, it seems like Asana has a lot going for it but if this is how their hiring process runs then I think it's time to start reevaluating or their reputation is going to go downhill very quickly.

Get rejected by a bot. Spend the time writing a nice cover letter and preparing your cv, submit it and what an hour or two to receive your automated rejection. No need to reply to the email (well you can't) and no need to seek feedback. They have recruiters to find and bless you as being worthy of an interview. The job ad includes a lot of useful information, and if you fit all the requirements and criteria, don't bother applying as you'll get an instant rejection.
