      Degree Programmer Trainee Interview

      30 Aug 2014
      Anonymous employee
      Manchester, England
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 4 months. I interviewed at Barclays (Manchester, England) in Jun 2014

      Interview

Initial application went through, I was then invited to complete some online exams - one being in maths and the other in data analysis and I'm sure there was another testing what was essentially basic grammer and English, mainly in terms of your ability to analyse qualitative data. Then I was invited to a group assesment in Manchester, which was most of the day (9:00 - 15:00(ish)). This consisted of 3 stages - Group discussion, 15 minute presentation and a one-to-one interview, which lasted about 30 minutes. There was around 5 people in my group. The group discussion was essentially us planning an event based on information given to us, which we had to budget and plan to quite exact detail in around 45 minutes, the whole time we were being observed, the whole point being that we were being analysed on how we interact and deal with one another, especially as this was the first exercise and we had all only just met it was defeinitely a challenge! The presentation was on an individual basis, with just two assesors observing - we were all given at least a week before the interview to prepare for this - ours was based on how we would make Barclays the 'Go To' bank. It was supposed to last around 15 minutes and then the two assesors ask you questions about your presenation and essentially quiz your understanding of the concept and of your own work. This sounds horrible but it honestly just felt like a normal conversation and as long as you've done enough research you'll be fine. The last stage I found to be the most intensive simply in terms of how in depth the questions were, requiring you to cite specific examples. The interview is essentially to as your previous experience and how situations you've dealt with in the past have prepared you for your time at Barclays, there is no point trying to make anything up because believe me, the questions are so in depth you'll just forget what you said and mess it up. My feedback stated that this was a strong section for me as I kept giving information without being asked for it - so if they ask you a question dont simply say 'yes' or 'no' because it just comes across better if they interviews dont have to drag infomation out of you! The whole process for me seemed to run like clockwork - everyone at my interview (in terms of the interviewers) knew what they were doing and made all of use feel so at ease. The main thing that was emphasised was that they're not looking for a 'set personality' in terms of only wanting one type of person, but they want a whole range of people which means I would just make sure that you are yourself, the day in too intensive for you to put on an act - which would be pointless anyway because the guys there have probably seen it all before! After you do all of this - if you get an offer there is then a screening process, which is rigorous and conducted by an external company. This checks your credit rating for CCJc, bankruptcy, etc. Previous employment checks, qualification checks, CRB checks, etc etc. Basically - DO NOT LIE on your application because you will be found out and you will fail your screening and all your time will have been wasted - anything that you think they should know - just be 100% upfront and honest because the fact that you've done that already shows a very desirable trait, honesty. Good luck to anyone attending these interviews! Even if you don't get the job its a really good and valuable experience!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

After my presentation during the questioning I had refered to Apple and its ability to show inovation without losing the appeal of simplicity and functionality - the interviewer stated that I obviously think that Apple is a pioneer for its sector, to which I replied yes, he then asked me what Barclays would need to do to be in that position - to which I replied that it already is! Went down pretty well, just showing the ability to be able to think on your feet comes across well, Im guessing because if you're going to be a manager one day its pretty essential!
