      Senior Software Engineer Interview

      14 May 2016
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      Declined offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Block (San Francisco, CA) in Apr 2016

      Interview

Was contacted by recruiter on LinkedIn, she told me the standard procedure - 2 phone screens and one onsite interview. We used coderpad for phone screens. I was contacted by Skype for the first screen, we talked a little bit about my background and quickly jumped to the coding problem. The screen called "pair programming" and interviewer was very helpful, he fixed some minor code issues (like semicolons, etc) while I concentrated on the actual algorithm, quite interesting experience. The second screen was the same, the question was about the same difficulty. I was a bit slow and over complicated the solution, but at the end of the interview I was able to simplify it and got the working code. The main point was to get it work! After that I was invited to onsite interview. Onsite interview schedule was: 2 pair programming, lunch, 1 pair programming, one resume discussion, one architecture and one talk with a manager. The pair programming's were on the interview station - desktop MAC with two keyboards, I had a choice to pick any installed IDE and any language, I used Intellij IDEA with Java. I was able to use Google and any other resources, it's pretty cool and much more closer to real work environment than silly whiteboard coding. All people were extremely nice and positive. At the end of the interview I got a gift - a box with Square reader and notebook, it was surprising and very nice. It was the first company were I experience something like that. Thanks! I got a positive feedback after the interview, but unfortunately the team didn't align with my professional interests and I declined the opportunity.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Coding questions were very close to you daily development work, in case you are good programmer and know your stuff you will not have problems even without significant preparation. The architecture and manager questions were pretty standard (design some application, interesting projects from previous work, etc).

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Block in Oct 2025

      Interview

I had a call with their recruiter first, talked about my past experience and what I'm look in for in my next role. Then had a technical front-end screening with two engineers where I needed to build an application. I thought I did well, I was able to implement a working app, but I did not pass. Not further feedback was given.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Implement a memory game in any JS framework or vanilla JS. You need to implement this game based on some demo app that you can play around with before hand. You need to implement the HTML/CSS and JS all from scratch. The game has the following behavior: you need to display N x N cards in a grid lay out. The number of N should be configurable by the user through a slider. When the user clicks a "start" button, N cards a highlighted for 2-3 seconds. Then the user needs to click on the cards that were highlighted. If the user clicks on the correct card, it changes the color to green, otherwise it changes to red. If all the initially highlighted cards are clicked the game is over. What to watch out for: you need to track the cards that were clicked in the grid, you need pick N random cards to be highlighted for each round of the game. You need to make sure the gird of N cards can be increased and reduced. It's not enough that the app works, you also need to write clean/readable code. You have about 40 minutes to implement this, and you need to talk through your work.
