I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Block (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2014
Interview
Submitted resume and cover letter, received email with 5 questions regarding Square and how I would respond. Answers could be found at their website. Day or so later was contacted for phone interview. This was fairly easy, mostly conversational. A couple of days later was asked to come in for an in-person interview. I met with two members of the team. They were both very nice and personable. I did not interview well and knew it, couldn't answer a few questions (was a bit nervous, wanted this position a little too much). Was told I would hear back by weekend, didn't hear anything so I reached out the next week.
Was informed that they would pursue other candidates. Not surprised of course.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
They asked me what position I would want in a team; creative, data, presenter, or leader. That part was fine but then they wanted example of when I was part of such a team. Went blank. Other question was how did I react to criticism regarding my customer service skills.
The entire interview process took about 3 weeks. First there was a writing sample they ask for which is very easy. The next step was a phone mock call. I was pretty nervous because I wasn’t sure how the role playing would go but the rep was super friendly and fed me the info before hand & I just navigated through the call showing my customer service skills. It wasn’t really about getting the info right but more so how can u resolve an issue effectively. The last step was in on site interview that lasted about an hour. I met w/ 2 hiring “team leads” for 30min each. The first hiring manager was pretty laid back & did ask basic interview questions but it was more conversational. The 2nd was a little more direct (reading through a list of questions) and his questions were longer/more complex. Overall my experience was great everyone was superb friendly & the office is so awesome!

I quickly received a response to my application and followed up with a simple writing sample. I had a phone interview a couple of days later that included a mock phone call, followed by an in person interview about a week later. The in person interview was at the same time as several other interviews. I interviewed with two managers that asked standard interview questions. I thought it went well with the first manager but couldn't get a read from the second. I received a rejection email about a week after the interview but was not given any feedback.
Thanks for taking the time to apply and interview! Hopefully, you'll give us another try in the future. Thanks! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to glassdoor@squareup.com.
