      Store Associate Interview

      16 Jun 2024
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Waterdown, ON
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Canadian Tire (Waterdown, ON) in Mar 2021

      Interview

Initially one of the best interviews I've ever had. I worked as a recycler at the Value Village across the road so I had forklift experience. The owner proudly informed me that due to Canadian Tire corporate structure, every store had control over compensation and benefits. He also told me their compensation had recently changed so he needed to double check with an employee before he could bring me an offer. The compensation change he was referring to was a provincial increase in minimum wage. He had the gall to pass off paying all retail associates the same wage as a good thing. He wanted me to drive a forklift for less than I was making at a thrift shop and did it with a smile. The owner is either incredibly out of touch or knows exactly what he's doing. If you're comfortable with that sort of pay you can get a job with much lower expectations at the Treasure Hunt across the road. If you want better pay you can go to one of the many businesses on highway 5 or even get a bit more at Value Village. The owner's attitude really rubbed me the wrong way. So many red flags in that interview even when you adjust your expectations since it's an entry-level position.
