Interview

I had a short call with hiring manager. She me I’d make the technical interview then I didn’t hear anything for weeks until I got a formulaic rejection email. She was nice but this was a very impersonal process and the communication was poor.

Interview

Thus far, I have only had the first of several interviews; the first interview is with the hiring/acquisition department. The employee was very friendly, informative, and upfront about the position. She asked me some personal questions about my life, past and future goals, what I enjoyed (related to the position), and how I might fit with the company.

Interview

One person could not meet because production fires. The people I did meet with were very friendly and personable. Did some simple coding and talked through problems. Thought I nailed the interview but was told they needed more senior leadership in place.

Interview

Recruiter reached out via email to setup a phone screen with the hiring manager and the tech lead on the team I was interviewing for. The phone screen was pretty laid back. Thy asked me technical questions that were clearly related to what was on my resume. I answered them appropriately. Within a couple days, the recruiter reached out again saying my interviewers were pleased and that they wanted to schedule an on-site interview. The on-site was broken up into three distinct sessions each with different interviewers. The first session was a hands-on coding interview with a software engineering manager from a different group. I was asked to solve some sample problems in Java while making use of TDD. The problems were fairly easy and the focus was more on code quality and decision making. The second session was a discussion of my technical background, and my interviewers were a different engineering manager and the tech lead from the team I was looking to join. They asked some philosophical questions about TDD and other design principles as well as some logistics about my availability being that I was still finishing up college at the time. The final session was with a Content Technology Manager, a Sr Systems Analyst, a Quality Assurance Engineer, and a Director, all of which were members of the team I was interviewing for. They went into more specific detail about the work the team does, and asked me some questions about my day-to-day experience in software development. This session seemed to be more of a team fit focussed discussion. Overall I was very pleased with the interview process. It gives you the opportunity to see a lot of different perspectives and while also learning more about the work you might end up doing if offered the position. The process was very low stress and I think it was organized very well. I got to stay in the same room and the interviewers came to me when it was their turn, which I was grateful for.

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Cengage Group in Sept 2017

Interview

I only did a technical phone interview with one of the managers. Call was schedule for 11:00 a.m, however for some technical difficulties the call started 20 minutes later which I blame no one for. The rest of the interview went by sharing the screen and I was given two questions to solve at the point. I did solve the first one correctly. For the second one I couldn't get it on time so the interviewer provided his email to submit it after which I did. What makes it a horrible experience and a place I regret applying for is that they never reached back for a result or even an excuse. One day I had to cal the company and ask for the manager at 10:00 a.m and the hr person was like it is too early for him to be here.

Interview

4hrs, meet with devs, meet with manager, meet with director, meet with a culture panel, I don't have anything to say about the interview process. This is ridiculous. Let me submit a review and get along with things.

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Cengage Group (Raleigh, NC) in Mar 2017

Interview

Went through a couple rounds of interviews with recruiters, HR, and eventually an architect. Interviews were pretty reasonable, particularly the technical. Technical interview centered largely on going through my experience and a few of my projects, with the architect poking about here and there, asking questions, etc. Pretty decent stuff. Unfortunately, at no point during this process would anyone tell me what I was interviewing for. This left me unable to ask any specific questions about my duties & responsibilities, tech, process, team, advancement... you name it. When I questioned the lack of clarity regarding exactly what job I was trying to land, they explained their hesitancy (didn't want to rule out candidates who were a poor match for one job, but might work out well elsewhere). While this seems reasonable initially, we really have to get specific at some point so I can evaluate the opportunity Next step was a face-to-face that sounded fairly intense, but since I wasn't given enough information to decide if I wanted the job, I had to decline to pursue further.

I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Cengage Group (Clifton Park, NY) in May 2015

Interview

Technical phone screening interview followed by onsite interview. Met with 4 engineers basically testing out knowledge for 2 hours. Has been 4 weeks since the interview, no offer, no rejection. Initially followed up after a week, told me to follow up again after 1-2 weeks. Followed up after 2 weeks, no response. Felt rather unprofessional. A simple rejection would've been suffice. Don't hold your breath when applying here.

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 5 days. I interviewed at Cengage Group (Boston, MA) in Feb 2015

Interview

Contacted via LinkedIn by in-house recruiter. Answered a bunch of questions via email. Eventually spoke with hiring manager. The interview was good, primarily about culture fit, technology stack, and playing with new technologies. Where the interview derailed was when I started interviewing them. Remember to ALWAYS interview THEM too! I asked about some things the new CEO had said about restructuring the company after it emerged from bankruptcy in April 2014; statements about laying off close to half the workforce by the end of fiscal year 2016, and reducing expenses, etc. The hiring manager didn't much like that I had done my homework and had asked hard questions. I wasn't looking for them to tell me everything was okay - and I mentioned that - I was looking for some guidance on how this would be a place I could expect to grow for a bit of time and not be looking for new work in the next year. I never heard back afterwards. Not even to tell me that they had passed or why. To spell out that I'm not a whiney candidate that didn't get a job, I'm happily and gainfully employed and was simply looking at Cengage as an exciting disrupting entity in the eLearning field that I was interested in working with.

Interview

The interview was informal. I met with the hiring manager in his office for while and then some of the team members came into the room later. One of the team members gave me a short quiz on programming and it was fairly easy. Everyone was friendly and it was an easy process overall.
