I applied in-person. I interviewed at Crazy Fish Bar & Gill (Port Jefferson, NY) in May 2017
Interview
I first emailed one of the owners - Stacy G. - asking if they hire extra waitstaff during the busy months of summer and she said yes and asked me to come in for an interview. I interviewed and she said she really liked me and would love to bring me on board, even just as a fill-in at first. She asked me to please study then menu and then to come back the following week to start training. She followed-up by emailing me asking if I can start work that Mother's Day. I told her I would be happy to, but she responded saying that actually I had to first come in to meet the other owner who hadn't officially met me yet. (I saw him on the first day I went in for the interview, but he blew off my presence without any acknowledgment.) I told her I would be happy to meet him - Richie - and came in the next day, per his request. When I got there, he acted like he had very little time for me and was incredibly rude and condescending. It was just me, him and a bartender in the room at that time. Richie told me he didn't think there was any room for me and that he didn't consider my three years of waitressing at an iHop to be "real waitressing." He laughed about how this is "no iHop- and that Crazy Fish is a 'real restaurant.'" The bartender in the back laughed as well. He told me he didn't think there was any room for me to work there. I thanked him for his time, but knew I would never want to work there under him even if Stacy apologized for his behavior. Later on, however, I emailed Stacy explaining to her why I was no longer going to take this job, but thanked her for being so nice earlier. To my surprise, she never apologized for how rude Richie was to me, even though I had mentioned in my email to her the condescending things he said to me. She just wished me luck in whatever I decided to do instead.
Overall, very bad experience for a potential new hire employee who truly wanted to work there.
* The best part is that an even fancier restaurant hired me the following week, so obviously they felt that my three years at iHop was, in fact, "real waitressing." *
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
"Why would you want to drive 30 mins to get here? I’m sure there are plenty of closer restaurants to you that are hiring.”
