      Transcriber Interview

      8 Aug 2023
      Anonymous interview candidate
      Secaucus, NJ
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Datagain (Secaucus, NJ)

      Interview

The interviewer reached out but refused to introduced himself. I only learned his name because of the email address he used to send the virtual interview invitation. After the interview, I was asked to share some personal details and to transcribe an audio. After I submitted it, they asked that I transcribe another audio but refused to explain why or give me my assessment results so I can see if a reassessment is necessary. They basically asked me to do free labor. Note that the audio files and templates they send for these "assessments" were not scripted or rehearsed. They will send you files from paying customers. Because of this, I was instructed not to share them, meaning, they are already in violation of their NDA by doing that. If my transcription job meets their target accuracy rate of 99%, I don't see why I need to transcribe another audio. If it doesn't, then that's much less reason to ask the candidate to transcribe another audio. They're just taking advantage of applicants looking for a job. They tend to avoid directly answering your questions and only want to talk about what they want from you. Probably not good to pursue any opportunity with them, whether you want to work as their contractor or hire them for transcription jobs. Also, their website says they're based in the US, but everyone there seems to be based in India, so not sure if they're lying on their website too. Payment for transcription work is USD 0.25 per audio-minute, and is done through PayPal. They say they will not shoulder the PayPal transaction/conversion fees, which we all know can get crazy steep. PayPal also withholds your money like they own it, without valid reason, and even if you've already paid the transaction fees. So that's another thing you might want to consider if you'd like to take the job. Also, what really made me decline their offer is their refusal to sign a service contract. They told me if they don't like my work they'll immediately block me and I won't get paid. So I asked if they have an objective way of assessing transcription quality but they refused to answer me and just told me they have a reviewer. So I suggested we sign a service contract outlining each of our responsibilities as "vendor" and "client" and they declined. Just a warning to anyone, you could be doing work today and not get paid on your payday. It is very likely they'll ghost you after they've gotten what they needed. Never not sign a service contract!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

How long have you been transcribing? What tools are you using? How long does it take you to transcribe an hour-long audio?
