I applied through a recruiter. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at DoorDash (Sunnyvale, CA) in May 2025

      Interview

Recruiter reached out via email. Had an initial conversation with the recruiter for a Staff Software Engineer Position. We agreed on the preliminary terms and scheduled a technical phone screen. Technical phone screen was a debugging exercise with the interviewer. Gave a task to complete which I completed using MVVM pattern and was asked a follow up to integrate ROOM, which I was able to pave the way and time ran out before I could run it. Got the nod to move on to On-site interview. Since I was not interviewing actively, I asked for 3 weeks of time and was scheduled for a full day of onsite interviews. The on-site round included 90-minutes of debugging or pair programming, 75 minutes of Android System Design, 45 minutes Domain Knowledge and 45 minutes of Behavioral. - Debugging round was similar to phone screen where I had to build on the work I had done. There was one main task and 2 Bonus questions. I was able to complete the main task but could not get to the Bonus questions. Personal ranking - Hire - System Design included designing a system with an engineer. I was asked to design the system on my own, with requirements provided but the interviewer kept on steering the discussion into a direction they wanted to have, because of their expertise in that area. I adhered and talked about the different options we have to what they were asking and why I would choose one over the other. Personal ranking - Hire - Domain Knowledge round revolved around various questions related to Android and Kotlin from App architecture to Compose UI to multithreading. Aced this one - Personal ranking - Strong Hire - Behavioral round was the same set of 5 questions which I answered based on my experience. Personal ranking - Hire

Build a page in this app from scratch where we should make a network call and also persist that data.

      Interview

The process is fast but the technical rounds are exhausting. DoorDash heavily indexes on practical implementation over pure algorithmic theory. You will get domain specific questions about dispatching Dashers or tracking active restaurant orders. After the technical screen there was a virtual onsite with a mix of heavy system design and practical live coding. They expect you to write production ready code very quickly.

      Interview

A DoorDash recruiter contacted me twice on LinkedIn about what sounded like an active senior engineering opportunity related to AI / agentic systems. The outreach was polished and made the role sound urgent and relevant to my background. After I replied, I was sent a Calendly link, but the first available slot was several weeks out. I scheduled the call anyway. Shortly before the scheduled call, the recruiter canceled with a generic message saying the position had been filled and they could not move forward. This was especially frustrating because the same pattern had happened before: outreach, long wait for recruiter availability, then cancellation because the role was no longer available. My impression was that this was more like pipeline sourcing than a real active recruiting process. I understand roles can close, but candidates should not be asked to wait weeks for a call unless there is a real approved opening and the recruiter can confirm the job ID, team, level, and hiring scope. DoorDash should be more transparent when outreach is only exploratory. Advice to candidates: Before scheduling time with DoorDash recruiting, ask for the official job link, job ID, team, level, location, and confirmation that the role is still active. Otherwise, you may spend weeks waiting for a recruiter screen that gets canceled before it happens.
