      Ph D R&D Scientist Interview

      25 Dec 2010
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Dow in Oct 2010

      Interview

An e-mail was sent out in my department (Materials Science & Engineering) requesting Ph.D. students who are interested in an R&D position at Dow to e-mail their resumes directly to the recruiter (contact info provided in the e-mail). Sometime in mid-October, several students (including me) got e-mail invitations from him saying that he will be conducting on-campus interviews the following week and asked us to sign up for a one-hour time slot. The actual interview lasted about 45 minutes. He asked me a series of questions, starting with describing my research. During the entire time, he was typing my responses onto his laptop and occasionally looked at me. There was no feedback from him; just me answering his questions. Finally he asked me if I had any questions and I asked a couple. At the very end, he finally gave me feedback.... saying how poorly I described my research! Apparently, describing your research to a recruiter isn't like giving a talk at a conference. You're supposed to get to the conclusion first, then go back and fill in the details. I did not get an on-site interview.
