Health and Wellness Program Manager- Illness Prevention Interview

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 days. I interviewed at General Motors (GM) in Feb 2008

      Interview

The site did not allow, but the interview was actually in 2005. I was living overseas in SOuth Africa, had come there for another job- and wanted to explore new opportunities. GM had advertised a position in a part of the country I had fallen in love with and I was very excited that they had a position where I could use some of my skills and knowledge. Since I was living in another city, I do believe that there was first a telephone interview. After this, I believe they narrowed the candidates down and then invited me to come for the day to East London to Interview- they would pay for the flight. I was picked up from the airport by an employee who gave me more information on the company and what they did in East London. I was impressed. There were two other candidates interviewing at the offices along with me. I was of course the only foreigner- and my main concern was this- South Africa has been trying to hire South Africans where possible- especially previously disadvantaged- and I actually support this- which makes it difficult to deal with this conundrum. It was a large group panel interview- with some senior level people, and some mid level managers. There were about 8 people and I was nervous- but they were welcoming. They asked me a series of questions- and gave me a few scenarios. It seemed like almost everyone on the panel had a chance to ask me something. I gave it my all even though I was concerned- and I learned a lot about the company and its corporate social responsibility programs. a few weeks later I received a kind email informing me the post had been otherwise filled. All in all it was not an unpleasant experience- though I really was excited for the opportunity.
