I passed the interview, all the technical questions and this company decided to lowball me the salary and title. I applied for Staff software engineer with a band of about 180k and they told me my interview performance wasn't good enough and said they'd give me the Senior with 150k. Huge surprise for me given that I felt I finished all the interviews with flying colors. I was told this was a new "restructuring" of the company but the reality is they're taking advantage of the economy and trying to get a deal on engineers. Then the manager proceeded to tell me that if my performance in 2 months was really good, they'd gladly up my salary to 180k and change my title to staff. This is just like the contract roles at google where they dangle the full time in front of you as a carrot and never give it to you. If they do this to you, don't fall for it. The whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth. They didn't really care if I'd be offended by the lowering of the band and the title. They're just pushing this agenda because they know some engineers are desperate in this layoff environment and they can totally take advantage of it. The company is suppose to operate in a very ethical domain, helping people in need, but internally I think the story is quite different with this kind of behavior with this new policy of low balling new hires. The economy isn't that great for SWE's right now and this company is exploiting it. It makes me wonder about their own product and whether it actually helps people or in actuality exploits low income people. I'm going to go into really deep detail about the interview questions.
