      Store Executive Development Program Interview

      28 Jun 2012
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through university. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Macy's (Los Angeles, CA) in Oct 2013

      Interview

I got a first round interview by submitting my resume through my campus OCR. The initial interview consisted of a standard 30 minute behavioral interview, along with asking if you are okay with working nights and weekends. Then I was sent to another room with a different interview who did a 10 minute behavioral, and 20 minute coaching exercise. The coaching exercise is a description of several different employees, and then you are given time to describe which one you would choose to coach, how you would improve them, and why you picked them in the first place. The second round interview is a overnight experience. Mine was located in Los Angeles, and they flew people in from Arizona, Norcal and Utah. The first afternoon/evening consists of information sessions and then dinner with some recruiters. The second day consists of 2 1-on-1 interviews, 1 of which the questions are based upon the responses you gave on a online personality test before you arrived to the second round. The other 2 events of the day are a business acumen exercise (given a store sales sheet, talk about how to improve sales, etc.) and a group exercise where you must come to an agreement about a hiring issue. Creativity is key in succeeding in both of these exercises, but they are not at all difficult. The day ends with a session about the career path of the store executive. I was offered the job about a week later. Macy's has a "at-will" policy, so they (and you) can terminate employment at any time, without reason.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Given the sales of these departments, how would you drive sales and allocate resources?

      Application

The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Macy's in Sept 2011

      Interview

consisted of behavioral interview and a presentation. presentation was really short and simple. the interviewer handed me a chart that lists employee performance by their past and current number of sales, their names, personality, character, and work attitudes. I had to pick one of the employees and show how I would praise and encourage her to be better as a manager. behavioral interview lasted much longer than the presentation and seemed to be the main thing. asked me general questions about why i wanna work there, what I know about the company, what I like about the company, leadership skills, problem solving skills, decisiveness, priority setting skills and time management skills when given many tasks and etc.

      Question 1

tell me how you managed to deal with a situation when you faced an immediate unexpected problem. How did you use your intuition and problem solving skills to solve the problem at hand? were you decisive? Why do you want to work at Macy's? Why not other department stores?
