Scrum Lead, Lead Agile/Scrum Software Engineer Interview

      28 Sept 2012
      Anonymous interview candidate
      San Francisco, CA
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied through a staffing agency. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Quantcast (San Francisco, CA) in Aug 2011

      Interview

Quantcast is one of the most unprofessional companies I have interviewed with. The process continued for over a month (only over phones, under a false pretense that an onsite would take place and they could not make up their minds). The interview started with a consulting recruiter contacting me. The recruiter explained to me the position (which was initially titled 'Scrum Lead'). I was then scheduled to speak with a VP over the phone, who insisted on making sure that this was a process owner and not a project management role. The questions were vague and high level (i.e.: did not seem open ended) . I was then contacted for scheduling an onsite but first needed to speak with an Quantcast recruiter this time around. The discussion went fine. After the chat, I was sent an overview of what the onsite interview might look like and the recruiters assured that they would send a schedule next. I then got a mail from one of the recruiters, saying since you are not in the same time zone, Quantcast would like to schedule another phone interview; to which I replied I was IN the same time zone. The recruiter then apologized and again assured that an onsite schedule was on its way. The next day the recruiter wrote to me again that even though you are IN the same time zone, Quantcast still wants to do a phone interview (but the recruiter also assured me that an onsite is happening and there is ZERO to worry about). As this did not make sense to me, I asked that what happens if the person on the phone does not recommend me, will they cancel an already scheduled onsite then? To which the recruiter replied, saying that an onsite is happening for sure. So I gave her dates for the 3rd phone interview (in the mean time the title for the role had changed to 'Lead Agile/Scrum Software Engineer') The Manager whom I then spoke to, went into software development mode of interviewing instead of keeping it closer to a process analyst or scrum centric kind of a interview. The manager also mentioned that my Resume indicated I had development experience in C#. There was no mention of C# on my Resume anywhere! After this interview, I waited for 3-4 days before checking-in with the first recruiter as to what were teh next steps? was an onsite schedule available yet?, to which she eventually (after 3 emails and 4 days) responded saying, we are not moving forward. Hence, it was not very clear as to what they were looking for. Did they require a Scrum Master, a Process Analyst, a Project Manager OR a Developer with XP/TDD experience... They simply could not make up their minds. So overall, each member had a different idea of what they wanted out of this role and they were not professional enough to keep their commitments. My feedback would also be that their interview panel researches the interview questions a bit more and don't make a commitment if you would not be able to see it through.
