I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Silent Spring Institute
Interview
6-week and 6+ hour process that consisted of 2 rounds of zoom interviews at over an hour each. A final round request for a "short test" that they claimed would take around 4 hours to complete. This involved creating two social media posts using their research materials, basically free work. Note that this was after they already requested multiple writing samples, work samples, and a portfolio.
The interview process was difficult because of the significant time commitment it demanded. This is a red flag for how they conduct everyday business. In fact, I was told to expect to work unpaid over time because they do not like people who "will only work until 4:30 and count up their vacation days" as apparently this shows you are not dedicated.
In the end, I received an offer with lowest salary within the given range. When I attempted to negotiate, they seemed to be offended. The negotiation process does not involve an HR rep, as they stated that being a small non-profit they do not have an HR employee. I was told they are not a "formal" organization and that the emails I had written for salary negotiation were "too professional" for them.
After all of this, I do feel that I dodged a bullet. The experience was disappointing considering I really appreciate their mission and research. At the beginning of this process, I was excited about the opportunity but by the end I was glad they had shown their true colors before I made a commitment.
Interview questions [2]
Question 1
How have you worked closely with research and research teams? How do you communicate with researchers?
We are sorry you found the interview difficult. Silent Spring Institute is committed to transparency and equity in our hiring process to ensure all employees are valued and set up for success. Asking candidates to perform a short writing test continues to be an effective measure of a candidate’s skills; it shows employers how a candidate thinks and where there’s potential for growth. Silent Spring is transparent about salaries and expectations. Salary offers are commensurate with experience and we occasionally ask staff to work outside office hours and on the weekends to meet a deadline or attend an event. We strive to create a collegial, inclusive, and collaborative work environment that values relationships and each person’s unique contributions. We encourage all job applicants to contact other current and former staff to learn more about the organization.
