      Research Chemist Interview

      31 Jul 2025
      Anonymous interview candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at SpiroChem in Mar 2025

      Interview

I had an interview with SpiroChem and felt the same way as described in other comments. It's a shame because the company's work is truly interesting and there are some excellent professionals, but the interviewer's attitude is terrible. It gives a very poor impression of the company, with such arrogance and complete lack of interest in the candidate. It feels more like a university exam than a job interview. I've done many job interviews, and I've never had such an unpleasant experience. One positive point is that afterwards he did take the time to write to me and let me know I was not moving forward in the selection process.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at SpiroChem (Basel)

      Interview

The interview essentially excluded anyone without a specific background in medicinal chemistry. It solely focused on recognizing and drawing specific reactions using ChemDraw, without exploring broader organic chemistry knowledge or the ability to engage in critical thinking. Consequently, candidates lacking expertise in medicinal chemistry, especially with those particular reactions, were effectively shut out of consideration.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

As I mentioned, questions about reaction names, without even leaving much time to think or reflect on the mechanism.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at SpiroChem

      Interview

Recently had a job interview (1st round) at SpiroChem for the position of a Research Chemist. I got the impression that if you know every named reaction in the book, enjoy spending your life in the lab and boast about how great you are ( an "Organic Bro" type of person ) this is the place for you. If you are a person that thrives in such an environment I invite you to know Clayden's Organic Chemistry through and through, specifically every named reaction mentioned in the book - this should get you through the process. What I really did not like about the interview was the openly racist rethoric by the interviewer. I believe the analogy of "a 500$ Rolex" was used in regards to the services of their Chinese competitors (of course SpiroChem being the real Rolex). The interviewer was quite full of themselves, yet quite insecure when it came to the company's reputation. I was openly asked what I think about the crappy reviews on Glassdoor...so I guess they really don't like what people write here. Overall this experience left a bad taste in my mouth.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

Several named reaction were asked to be drawn, all from Clayden.
