      Rails Developer Interview

      19 Sept 2014
      Anonymous employee
      Fort Wayne, IN
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Squaremouth (Fort Wayne, IN) in Aug 2014

      Interview

I initially submitted an application and received a skills evaluation by mail the same day. The skills evaluation asked to solve four Project Euler problems using the Ruby programming language. After submitting the completed skills evaluation I received an email acknowledging their receipt the next day. Five days later I received an invitation to interview then there was some back and forth for scheduling. I had a bit of insight into the company from friends and discussions about the company in the past so I had an idea of how to prepare for the interview. The day of the first interview was interesting. The interview was with the CIO and two developers. The office was very nice and was open so my interview was done in front of the other employees, although they didn't participate and were busy doing their own things. It felt very casual and was a comfortable conversation where we discussed my experiences and what an experience at Squaremouth might be like. I felt like the interview went really well and that I had learned a lot about the company and their values. I felt comfortable setting a personal goal for what I was looking for from the company and was very excited at the prospect of joining their team. Five days after the interview I received an email inviting me to a second interview with their entire development team at a predetermined time. I was available so I didn't bother trying to reschedule. The day of the second interview was just as exciting. To set a tone for the environment, the CIO was barefoot during this interview. It was the CIO, the two developers from before, and four other developers. This interview felt a bit like a firing squad but was not very technical, instead asking me questions about my experiences and typical interview personality questions. There was a brief discussion of salary in which I was straight forward and told them exactly what I was looking for. I felt the interview went well and, again, I left feeling excited at the prospect of joining their team. Two days later I received a phone call from the CIO where he provided me an offer and we discussed the terms of employment and the steps needed to get there. Overall it was an incredibly enjoyable experience.
